I heard a story of my friend's friend ( an IMG with no GC/Citizenship) who got matched at the program in CA which usually doesn't take IMGs, that too with scores in 80s and 1-2 months of observership.. Of course he had some connections.. But is this possible even if you have one? Matched at the program that usually doesn't take IMGs, that too in CA?) Do connections work to this extent? Previously I thought "when a program says they don't take IMGs, they are not ALLOWED to take them.. When they say they don't sponsor H1B, they are not ALLOWED to do that." But this really shook me..

There's no rule or law or regulation that says "IMG cannot be accepted".

It all depends on the program director and the selection committee.

They can do anything, they can take whomever they like regardless of scores, medical school origin, year of graduation, ...etc

So do not be surprised about that story and you'll hear many more in the future.
