hi this seems silly but i haven't much clue as to how we go about registering for the step 1 exam.

i checked out the usmle official website, it told me to do it under ECFMG for IMGs. and i downloaded this form from the website for test accommodations for steps 1 and 2ck because as i understand when u apply for step 1 u do it for step 2ck as well? so i downloaded the forms read em' and feel like i have a huge pile to mail them. then i checked out ECFMG website and they said i can apply for an on-line usmle ID. what on earth is that now? i did anyways, i should hear from them in 5 working days. and if i do, what do i do with this ID? does this mean that now i can apply on-line instead of sending in the forms i downloaded along with the documents they asked for??

im the first person in my university doing this exam since early-90s (i think) when one of my lecturers did his residency in orthopedics in Texas. he doesn't remember much of how he went through it but im pretty sure it wasn't on-line. :)

so if someone can tell me what the usmle ID from the ECFMG is all about and how to go about registering for the step 1. pls pls pls explain. im not too keen on admin blabber. :p.. business was never my thing.

thank u all.

i have a few questions sabio,

1.what does it mean that i have to send them my medical school diploma? is the course i did before enrolling in med school? if yes, i have done a UNSW pre-U course then i did a BSc Biotechnology. So do i send in my transcripts or just the certificate of the degree?

2.i have yet to pay for all the details i have entered into the IWA. i think i have 14 days. do i pay within these 14 days?

3.my school isnt a participant of ECFMG med school WP. but i wanna ask my supervising lecturer to register. can she register instead and be in charge on the school behalf? because this is a non-English speaking school and this lecturer im talking about it helping us register for the usmle but she doesnt understand much so im doing the research for her.

4.after i pay everything ($880 for me), if i decide to change the location of my PTC, can i still do that? also once ive paid, can i wait till july to send in my forms and documents? the documents are at home (Malaysia) and im in Indonesia. i will need to get the photocopied version of the transcripts etc certified by a lawyer in Malaysia before i can send them in.

thank u. sorry for bothering.:p

The Diploma is your final "Medical" degree that granted you MBBS, MB, MB BCh, BAO, BMBS, MBBChir, MBChB, MD, DO, ...etc.
BSc is not in the list as far as I understand.
If it is not in English then you have to translate it.

Also, recently I noticed that they started requesting that from the medical school rather directly from the applicant though am not sure about it. Let's see if other people post their experiences in this thread.

Yes, you have to pay within 14 days or your application is canceled and you have to then re-apply.

Yes, absolutely. That's a Nobel work what you are doing. If you succeed you will help all the generations of students that graduate after you. Tell her to go to this website
https://ecam.ecfmg.org/login.aspx?app=EMSWP to try to register your school with the EMSWP. However, I think the dean or a higher official should be involved also.

You are not going to be allowed to sit the exam until you verify your medical school credentials. So it doesn't matter if you pay now or later. Ultimately, you have finish all the papers before your are granted a scheduling permit.

thank u sabio

i have completed the online application with ECFMG (paid for the step 1).

so i just wanna confirm this next step. according to what i understand i only have one step left (because im a student still and will be at the time i take the exam and my school is registered with the ECFMGWP), which is submitting the form 186 and IWA form 187. so i dont need to submit prior diplomas (since it was BSc not MD) hence i dont need forms 344 and 345.

and for forms 186 and 187 i have to complete it in the presence of my med school official that has been assigned to work with the ECFMGWP. and once i have completed both forms, my university will send those forms in to ECFMG in Philadelphia and all i do is wait about 3 weeks before they confirm it all with me. and i can check my status anytime i want on the OASIS online.

so did i understand all that correctly?

Orthopedic residency is very competitive and you need to pass all USMLE steps with high scores and get some US clinical experience before they can accept you.
