Hi there,

I am from Egypt and studying for step 1. I know that to increase my chances for residency LoR's, research and USCE are needed. The problem is for me as an Egyptian how can I get these credentials, as it will have a big burden on me to travel to USA to be involved in USCE or to get LoR's

Can anyone tell me how he got these things (I mean if he is not an American) ?

i suggest researching first and ask questions of what you didnt understand..

there is a search option.. and google.. there are lots of forums and hundreds of threads with this topic...

but the basics are:

reasearch all the programs that you like.. if u are a student yet u have the option of a hands on clinical elective

if not, observerships are your option..

for both, a large porcentage of them ask for step 1.. not all of the though..

best advice i can give u.. email everyone u can..

MOST people would be in your shoes especially IMGs. the decision to take the path of usmle includes this question as well. Indeed if you want it well done in this usmle the truth is one would spend money! get the programmes u wish to have residency in and start searching for the various schools/hospitals involved all over usa and send them emails. basic requirement for some is step 1 without accommodation. so look into all of these and gather money and apply. best wishes!

thanks for that.... I also had the same question..but when to apply for USCE? some schools don't allow time for electives during the clinical years..unfortunately when it was time for electives, I did not have STEP 1 in hand. Also after graduation, the chances of getting an elective are low. Should one go for observerships in this case?

you are right! after school clerkship is difficult to come by but observaship is most often than not the option! when i was a student i had a clerkship at university of michigan and the profession incharge told me, they prefer students for clerkship to doctors becos insurrance covers the students to touch patients but not the doctors!

thanks alot for replying...one last query, so do u think observerships are considered USCE and is there a chance to get a LoR if u do it? Also, what is the chance of matching without USCE but good scores? is USCE a must for matching into let's say a good IM/peds program?
Thanks

1. my understanding of USCE is having an exposure (at least to know how some basic things are done in usa hospitals) in an USA hospital so observaship counts as part. but clerkship is better than observaship becos in clerkship you are involved in direct patient care!
2. there is big chance to get LOR's and to make links as well if you do observaship! it's all about your human relations! remember pple mact with links.
3. chance of matching withot USCE from a colleague who matched this yr is variable! but USCE plays a major role in you getting interviews especially the university programmes!
4. USCE is not a MUST but a NECESSITY for getting into all programmes not only IM/paedics

best wishes
