IMG Friendly States?

16857 Views 11 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Novobiocin
I'd like to know if there are certain states that tend to admit IMGs more easily and certain others which are more difficult, or whether this is just a myth.

Also, where does California measure on this scale? I ask because that is my preference, mainly because all 3 of my brothers are in Cal.

The IMG friendliest states are:

  • New York
  • New Jersey
  • Illinois
  • Massachusetts
  • Baltimore
  • Virginia
  • Michigan
  • Ohio
  • Florida
  • Pennsylvania
  • Texas
  • Nevada
All other states are not as friendly as these.

As for California it's almost impossible to get a residency match for IMGs and it can be placed as the most difficult state to match for IMG, however, it is still not impossible.

The states mentioned by Sabio are the top on the IMG friendly list, however you can still find sporadic programs here and there. Later at the 2011 match begining I will post the complete list in this website based on the results of 2010 match. Regarding California most of the family medicine and psych programs there are IMG friendly, however the other specialties are competitive because the AMGs like these states. You will need a PTAL (california letter) to be senT to the ERAS (as one of your recommendation letters). Visit the California board website for more info about how to get a PTAL. The sooner you get it, the better your chances in getting IVs.

Thanks, Sabio and ApplicantGuide.

I have another related question:
If I do residency in a certain specialty in an IMG-friendly state, is it then possible to practice in a state which is not IMG-friendly, e.g. Cal? Is this a difficult process? I have a green card, if that is of relevance.

Dont worry about it, once you get the American board, you can practice anywhere you want. Maybe you will face some unremarkable paper work in some states just for verification and liscence but it will not be any major issue for you.

I agree with applicantguide, once you finish you boards you can practice anywhere including California. In fact, most of the IMG practicing physicians in California have in fact finished their residency somewhere else and then returned to California for practice.

Heres some data provided by nrmp to help you. It will let you know which states are IMG friendly to which speciality.

It should be Maryland instead of Baltimore since it is not a state.:)
