Hi,

I am new to the whole USMLE exam and I need some inputs regarding this.

I also wanted to know if the medical schools in the US offer a 2 months internship while am still doing my internship in India.

electives in usa

hi meghana.
i feel nice to know that Indian students are gathering all the info required and planning their future properly. many are even are done with step1.
it is highly recommended to have USCE (united states clinical experience) with u.
doing electives during your internship ranks best among any of the USCE. if u are recently into your internship, then it is the best time for u to go for the electives.
after internship all we can do is observership, which ranks lower than doing electives.
i came across a thread in this forum regarding electives. hope it would be of some help for u.

i dint know about this forum when i was an internee, and not too many seniors of my college were into usmle. hope u make the best use of being in this forum.
wish u all luck for your future.:)

I am very glad to have come across this post because I had some similar questions regarding doing electives during the internship year. I'm from Bangladesh and we have a curriculum quite similar to India's so yes our last part of medical school is the internship year and that seems to me like the only time we can apply for electives as before this year, before completing our final professional examination, we've lectures and wards to attend so the school wouldn't definitely allow us to go the US then. But the problem is the internees are referred to as 'intern doctors' here. This means we're not quite considered students but but in essence we are 'students' cause we do not receive our graduation certificate before completion of this year (although the previous year is termed the final year and this year the intership year), have to do presentations, a few exams and rotate through all the departments and we aren't licensed physicians. Is this the same case in India? I mean are the internees there considered students? And if it is possible to do electives during the internship year, could someone be kind enough to give me an outline and the requirements of the whole process?

Thank you in advance! :)

I would definitely recommend a clinical elective if you are in your final year and plan to practice in the US later on in the future.
Johns Hopkins University is a good choice. Eitherway I would recommend that you consult a study advisor.
