Long story short, I understand that Residency Directors dislike seeing gaps so my original plan was to go from Step 1 right into my rotations. So i finish in late may, then take Step in August. There's been a slight bump in the road as my girlfriend who is also in medical school with me has cancer and may need to get surgery done. How bad will it look if I missed my first round of clinical rotations in September and did December instead? Or if anyone knows a way to "hide that gap"? I'm not sure what is considered an acceptable reason. We've been together a long time and I don't want to make her go through this alone. I'm just looking for a game plan now so i can prepare accordingly.

Thanks in advance.

Just take the time that you need. Always be honest. There's no shortcuts nor "hide" in life, specially in medicine . work hard, and always be honest, everything will align accordingly to your efforts.
