I have applied for step 1 and my permit is available..I have taken my date in August...
I am engaged and my fiance is in US..I'll be getting married in next 2 weeks and my wedding reception would be after my step 1 that is in September...after 2 weeks I'll start my visa processing so that by the time I'll give my step 1 I'll be ready to go to US after my wedding reception in September..

My question is if I want to change my surname with my husband name and apply with that name in visa..then will it effect my permit available for step 1 with surname different? do they check visa status?

Keep you last name

The best is to delay the change of your surname until you get here in USA, do the exams, and then after that you can change your name.

In USA, a woman can keep her last name and she doesn't need to change it to her husband's last name. It's optional and the US law allows it and you can get the visa in your last name.

PS- I bet your husband won't be happy

what name is on your visa and passport? is it the married surname ? Since the passport is you identifying doc for most countries, you should probably fax in your name change form to make sure (form 182)

but make sure to put in your name change request only after you have applied for all exams because the form 186 becomes invalid after the name change. So unless you are sure of being able to get a form 186 from the US again, apply for both steps before the name change.( take a far off date if you are not sure)

I want to start applying for step 1 and just realized that now they verify your credentials before u apply for your exam...
I got married and my green card is under my married name..however all my credentials and diploma would be under my maiden name...under what name should I apply...I'm really confused..

Apply with your maiden (original name on your Diploma) then request a change of name with ECFMG using form 182
