Often the differentiation between the two is quite difficult. However, there are certain differences that should make the possibility of one is more than the other.

Cocaine: IUGR, High pitched crying, apnea, neurodevelopmental defects, periventricular luekomalacia, CNS hemorrhage, increased sucking, increased SIDS incidence.

Opiates: No increase in congenital abnormalities, Diarrhea, Preterm labor, placental abruption, yawning, sneezing, mottling, and fever.
