hello ,
Im a fresh medical graduate from India .. could you please tell me what are the chances of me getting into a neurosurgery residency programme .. and what score USMLE must i get for a realistic chance ....
i dont have any publications to my name
i have very good scores in undergrad..

please help

Very very difficult

Neurosurgery residency is one of the most if not the most competitive specialty ever in USA.
Every year there are only 130 residency positions and last year there were NO IMG accepted.

If you insist however then here' what you should do

-Step 1 score above 250
-Step 2 CK score above 250
-Step 2 CS pass from first time
-At least one year of neurosurgery research in USA
-First name author of publication in high profile Medline and preferrable US medical journals
-Strong connections with neurosurgeons here in the US
-Some extra credentials such as a master degree or a PHD or MPH would also be helpful

Starting with general surgery is certainly easier than starting with surgical subspecialties and many IMGs are able to get in. Starting neurosurgery after general surgery is not realistic because then you will spend over a decade working as a resident!
I'd say all surgical subspecialties are not IMG friendly.
Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Plastic surgery, Urology, Pediatric Surgery, ...etc all of them are highly attractive to the US graduate.
As for the Visa, yes it helps, but do not expect magical effects. An IMG is an IMG with or without Visa and/or US citizenship.

I am in a similar situation as you currently and ve freshly graduated from bangalore with good academic grades but no research on me. Could you tell me how you went about it as I also want to apply to neurosurgery itself and m yet to start writing my steps.

i know one person.....you need to be a trained neurosurgeon in india....complete resdency ie MCh, do fellowship in usa for 1 year........nedd publication in Neurosurgery journals, and then apply for residency...IE a redo residency..that you will get........coz you hav already been a fellow ....but you hav to do it again....the whole residency....

Residency in USA

Hi Friends

I believe getting Residency in Orthopedics is really hard.

Can anyone suggest me any possibilities of Orthopedics Residency in US for foreign Medical graduate.

A)I have more than average scores in both Steps( USMLE).

B) I have few months of US clinical experiences in General surgery,trauma and orthopedics.

C) Permanent Residence status in USA.

D) Recently Completed Residency in Orthopedics and trauma surgery from home country(Asia).

Can I try for Orthopedics ?

Do you know any programs that are IMG friendly ( interested in Orthopedics)?

Please suggest me what will be the other residency options for me with above credential ( that will be easy for IMG in USA).

You had given really good information.. if I am able to complete possible number of requirements you had given, than is there any chance to get Neurosurgery Residency....?
I find than last year there was 213 positions.. i am not saying your information is incorrect.. May other positions were filled by pre-match..
