hi everyone.. new here... im a 2009 graduate back in the philippines took the philippine board last august 2010... starting to review on my USMLE... just wondering when should i take my step 1 2ck 2cs.... so that i could join the matching on 2012... is it even possible... they say our boards are somewhat the same... except we didnt have behavioral science.... we had 4 days of exams 100 questions per subject (basics and clinical i.e IM, pedia, etc) and a total of 12 subjects (1200 items).... somewhat a combination of step 1 and step 2ck.... basics and clinical stuff.... some of the reviewer we had were the same...like microbio MRS, physio BRS, patho BRS, we also used first aid as a last ditch before the final exam... it help though...

i got an 80% top 1 on the entire philippines was 89% although nobody gets more than 90% so far

i bought kaplan lecture notes step 1 and step2ck it should arrive next week... coz i didnt bring my old reviewers and i think some of them were out of date... also downloaded the goljan audio....

just wondering when should i take the exam to be even remotely possible to join the 2012 residency matching....

also i sent my application last november 3.. postal said that it arrived... but no response from ecfmg..(should i be worried?)

any information on what i need to do? or how should i plan for my exam date would be greatly appreciated thank you very much in advance... God bless

If you wanna apply for the match for june 2012, ul have to rusj things yp. Cuz the match starts at sept 1. And the earlier you apply the better. If you have done FS already then you should give around 3-4 months starting form now, for step 1. Do Kaplan Series lecture notes and videos. And lots and lots of questions form Kaplan Q bank. Take U workd online and NBME form 6 and 7 online too.
Tke step 2 CS after that. It doesnt require lots of practice. After that give around 3-4 months to step 2 CK.
If you wanna go on J1 you can then have a shot for 2012-2013 match.

There is one 2 digit score passing at 75 and a 3 digit score passing at 187. These are only scores and not percentiles. And the Residency programmes are concerned with 3 digit score mainly. There is a formulae of calculating your percentile as well. There are 46 questions per block and a total of 7 block which make up 322 questions!

tnks for the reply dr sidd... really appreciate this.... some people said that i should finish exams before june 2011... so that i can apply externship/observeship.... is it really necessary and if so how many externships should i apply?...

i am currently a GC holder.... currently staying in NY at the moment...

i currently set the date of my step 2ck at feb-april.... can i still change this or not?

thank you for your advice on the 3 digit scoring... guess my mates was wrong thinking that the 2nd digit is important... judging from the forums so it means that a good score is 250/322?

i really appreciate your reply... sorry for the additional questions God bless.

Hi - its definitely possible - did you set your Step 2CK as your first exam? If so, I'm not sure about the schedule. Behavioural science is very high yield for both step 1 and 2 so make sure spend your time covering that material well. You should also do an externship - even if for nothing else, it will help you get used to the system here (for example doctors can spend up to half their day doing insurance paperwork - this may be new to you...)
ECFMG will take some time. This is normal. You can call them, but usually they will let you know if anything is wrong.

As far as the scoring goes I believe if you can get above a 240 its pretty much a 99 but in theory you're right - if you got all the questions right your score would be 99/322. I wouldn't worry about that so much. A three digit score of around 220+ is considered a good score and depending on what specialty you apply for you should be fine with that with the basic primary care specialities. Other things matter more there such as research, interview skills and visa.

Hope that helps!

The more US clinical experience you gain the better. Since ur a green card holder with no visa issues, you shouldnt be too concerned with step 3 and i would recommend you to do 3-6 months of observership if possible.
