A 10-year-old boy is severely burned. Nitrogen loss occurs during the first few days after the burn. During this acute period, which of the following substances plays a major role in nitrogen loss?

(A) Cortisol
(B) Erythropoietin
(C) Insulin
(D) Parathyroid hormone
(E) Thyroxine (T4)

What!

I don't think there's anybody that can answer this confusing question.

I mean come on, nitrogen loss due to a hormone!

Please post the answer with explanation if you can

This is a guess, but Cortisol? Since it's the number one stress hormone and has catabolic function it would break down the proteins in the body and increase nitrogen excretion as urea. Also explains y burn patients tend to suffer from renal stones and their dietary intake has to be monitored.

Considering burn patient as a person with a stress.... cortisol....

@ gnnd: thyroxine causes nitrogen loss this is why hyperthyroid pts have weight loss

the answer is cortisol. good guess housewannabe. just relate stress (burn ptt) with nitrogen loss:).. stress causes highly elevated cortisol level, even when we are normally stress or angry:mad:
