Hi guys,

Is that just a myth or true that it is difficult for old IMG to get decent residency programme?

Too generalized!

this issue has been repeatedly discussed, see the threads listed here
Threads Tagged with Old Grads

There's no single answer to your question because your question is very generalized.

There are other factors that play role in the chance of getting residency such as:
USMLE Scores, Prior experience, No Gaps in CV, USCE, Visa Status, connections, and many others.

If we remove the confounding factors, i.e. if we take two candidate with exactly similar profiles with the difference is only fresh versus old grad then yes, the old grad has much lower chances than the fresh grad.

The problem is the filter

The story of old grads difficulty getting into residency is absolutely a true story.

The problem is that many residency programs put graduation freshness filter in their ERAS machine, for example, they filter out all grads more than 3 years or 5 years or 10 years from graduation and thence your application will not be seen at all by the selection committee no matter how good the old grad is.

Therefore, the bypass, to this "huge problem" is by trying to get connections to at least make the selection committee see your profile. Once they see it, and if the profile is good, then your chances will be equalized with the fresh graduate.

Thanks both

Yes. Bypassing the filter is the key. I live in the UK and not familiar with the process there.

What's the best way to get connection to selection committee?

I'd like to add question in this topic:
Could we know that any particular residency programs have age/old graduation DISCRIMINATION (just for avoid to apply)?
In the other words how old IMG know where to apply?

We will spend time and money for applying. We can't just ask - sorry do you have any discrimination for applying to your program (age, sex, racial, nationality, "freshness" etc.) :)) But may be we can see something - "this is not for you".

Before applying in ERAS you can research the residency program websites and most of them announce their policy regarding "years after graduation" you can also subscribe to Residency Search Companies as they can help you filter out programs by different criteria.
