Hi guys I am an IMG from India,
I have a doubt regarding prelim and transitional residency years....what are the criteria to consider before opting for either of them? actually advantages of one over the other......
my scores step 1...247/99
step 2...258/99
awaiting CS results
I have a green card... applied for PTAL
I am wondering whether these scores are competitive enough to get interviews for the above residencies????
Please can anybody tell me whether there is any book available which can solve doubts about American residency???:redcheeks;:redcheeks;

The difference between prelim and transitional residency years

So you did not specify which specialty are you looking for?

Anyway your scores are awesome and the fact that you have Green Card makes your chances very high in obtaining what you want.

Prelim and Transitional years are one year residency allocations that you get when you apply for Advanced (not categorical) programs.

So for example if you are applying for radiology which is an advanced program then you'll be placed in a one year transitional in which you rotate in medicine, surgery, peds, ..etc. Basically it's a year that prepare you for the real thing.

The prelim is a similar one but you don't rotate in various specialties rather you stick to surgery or medicine so either have surgical prelim or medical prelim.

Your scores and GC status are excellent for any competetion you want, but, PDs usually prefer to give the transitional positions to AMGs. Anyway, in 2010 most of the advanced programs were interviewing their applicants for prelim positions as well to avoid making them going to the hectic scramble or even lose these competitive applicants. My advice is look in the websites of the advanced programs and see whether they offer prelim positions as well.

Goodluck

PTAL is the main problem, but also anesthesia is a competitive field especially when the number of positions are limited in a certain area. I don't have transitional list, however the same IM list you can use it as prelim IM list if available in these programs.
