I recently gave my step one and scored 251. My med school is about to end. I have a clinical elective in Herbert Wertheim College of medicine (florida international university). I will give my CS in april and CK in the end of june. I wanted to know that what would be the probablity of getting a match in internal medicine with just one LOR,considering that HWCOM is not a big name. Should i apply for the match this year or should i wait and get more observerships and letters?
thank you

good score but it all depends on what you want.

If you want to a high end university program? forget about it.. Community or low to mid level university? you have a very good chance, provided you complete CK and CS successfully and have all your scores by September 15th next year.

You can also get multiple LOR's in a single rotation, just let the attendings know by the end of your first week (after they got to know you) that you will like a Letter from them and that you will work your hardest to earn it.

Applying is very expensive, and very risk-reward. Is it worth sitting out a year for more experience? Veeery hard to say, in YOUR specific situation i think being a recent graduate is more important.

If i were you i would try to get at least 2 LOR's in that observership and complete all your exams (step 3 isnt neccesary) and apply september this year.

If you apply smartly you will get at least 10 interviews (assuming you do a good CK and CS)

hi there.
thanks for the help.
and what do you think of applying on november with 2 months of observerships and good scores?
does one have the same chances?

Nonononononono, NO.

NEVER EVER apply late. Seriously, it's the difference between having 2 interviews and 10+

If you only have Step 1 completed for September 15th and you are close to taking CK or CS, then apply with that. Obviously not having everything ready is going to hurt you a LOT, but its far worse to apply in november or even october. Most programs already combed through all the applications by then.

Applying on time and having everything ready is so incredibly important, i can't stress this enough. If you can't meet the deadline and or don't want to apply incomplete, then wait for next year and focus on getting higher scores/research/experience during that extra year.

Just search for "applied late nrmp match" and you will see all the horror stories.

Late would be because of observership. Not USMLE scores.
Thanks for responding. Will look into having a better profile.
