A 65-year-old man is diagnosed with early stage prostate cancer (with a biopsy) after a positive PSA test Physical examination showed no signs of metastases CT scan is noncontributory The patient underwent prostatectomy. After recovering from the surgery, he noticed that the volume of his ejaculate was significantly reduced. Which of the following would most likely be decreased in the seminal fluid of this patient?
A. Alkaline mucus
B. Carnitine and acetyl carnitine
C. Fructose and prostaglandins
D. Spermatozoa
E. Zinc

contribution from prostate includes....
Acid phosphatase, fibrinolysin , zinc, citric acid, prostate specific antigen, proteolytic enzymes......so i would go for E zinc...

contributions from other organs....
Testis=spermatozoa

Seminal vesicle=amino acids, citrate, fructose, flavins, enzymes, protiens, vitC, phosphorylcholine & prostaglandins.....

Bulbourethral glands=mucus , sialic acid, galactose...

i ll go with E.Zinc is major component of sperm during ejaculation and can impact sperm mobility

Nuclear condensation is further stabilized by zinc, which is an important constituent of the prostate gland secretion. Zinc is secreted from the prostate and is bound to metallothionein. Zinc-mediated final stabilization of the sperm chromatin occurs after ejaculation.

Why can't it be D?

I am thinking it can be spermatozoa, which are less in number due to retrograde ejaculation which is a common complain post prostatectomy...

but as the surgery was done Zinc and the other things secreted fromt he prostate are completely lost so i think it s ZINC
