I am filling my on line application to appear for step 1..but I have got a query regarding Item 21 which asks us for our clinical clerkships...does that requires me to provide information regarding my all clinical postings from starting till end that is from my second year till my final year or does it require just the rotations I am having as post graduate intern or does it require both?..am applying as a student as am done with only 6 months of my 1 year compulsory pre graduate internship...please guide me ...

It depends ...

This question is about any clerkships that you have done (outside) your in campus core curriculum.

Any "clinical" units that you have mentioned in your medical school transcript is not considered as a clerkship and should not be included in item 21 of the online application.

There are medical schools which send their students outside their campus for clinical training (Caribbean Medical Schools for example). The ECFMG is looking particularly for these rotations. otherwise, anything that is in your educational curriculum and is include in your transcript you don't need to include it.

This issue has also been previously discussed here

I am International medical student but not Caribbean...If my university allowed to take the Surgery/sub-surgery clerkship (not core clerkship) that is a part of my medical curriculum education in USA, but there would not be anything on the transcript indicates that I took it in USA....So is this curricular or extracurricular? Where to describe it in ECFMG & CAF ?
suppose that there are other clinical rotations took in USA but mentioned on the transcript as "elective"....are these rotations same with the above rotation??

I fear that If they are not listed/mentioned beside each other that programs may miss some of my experience

Thanks in advance

Anything mentioned in the transcript is considered clerkship and you have to tell the ECFMG about in the ECFMG online application.
Anything not mentioned in the transcript you can tell about in the common application form in ERAS as a form of experience whether it's before or after you graduate, it does not matter, what matter is what's written in the transcript.

That would fit into job experience rather than clerkships. Clerkships are designated for medical students, not graduates.

I am really confused now! According to Sabio, we should not mention clerkships that are in our transcript.
But lee-usmle says exactly the opposite! So which is it? What should I mention in Question 21? Please help!

Also, does it matter where I did the clerkship? My own school vs. a different hospital vs. in the US?

thanks for your help!

Hi there!

I'm trying to fill out form 186 and have a question abt item 21. I know this has been discussed a lot but I keep getting conflicting replies. So just wanted to make sure..

1. Do I need to mention all the rotations I have gone through during 3rd yr of med school? These are included in my med school curriculum

2. Do observerships count as clerkships?

Thanks!
