Hi Everyone,

I received my step 1 results today of 219/93. Not too thrilled about it.

About me, I'm a caribbean med student, and I will now start my two years of clinical rotation in the United States.

I wanted to know, is it possible for me to match into a Family Med, IM, or Peds residency with this score (with a good step 2 and LORs)??

I'm really unsure!

Definitely Great

The average score for Caribbeans who got matched last year (in my experience) was below 90, let me say 85.

Your score is not bad at all.

Of course you'll be getting IM, Peds, or FM

Your clinical rotations in US will also boost your chances

Hey there,

I just found out that a 217 mark is good enough for peds
About everything else I don't know. I'll try to find out and update you.
or now concentrate on step 2 and rest will be fine.

Some facts for you

I will give you some data from the NRMP Charting Outcomes for the year 2009.

Mean USMLE Step 1 Score of matched IMGs in Internal Medicine was 222
Mean USMLE Step 2 CK Score of matched IMGs in Internal Medicine was 226

Mean USMLE Step 1 Score of matched IMGs in Pediatrics was 214
Mean USMLE Step 2 CK Score of matched IMGs in Pediatrics was 220

Mean USMLE Step 1 Score of matched IMGs in Family Medicine was 201
Mean USMLE Step 2 CK Score of matched IMGs in Family Medicine was 205

So as you can see your 219 score is above the mean for Peds and FM, yet it's below the mean for IM.

The data above is from the 2009 match and no data available for the 2010 match.

Your chances into these residencies will significantly increase when you do US rotations and get US LoRs.

Bottom line, I'd say you should work hard on your Step 2 score and get good LoRs and you should easily be on your way into residency.

Go celebrate, you're done and you have a good score! Keep in mind that those #'s that Sabio quoted are for IMGs in general, many of whom do not have extensive clinical experience in the US. Since you're doing your clinical rotations here, that will be a huge plus. Go ace Step 2 and you should be fine for any of those residencies!
