Definitely it's best to take Step 3 before residency and we have discussed that before here http://www.usmle-forums.com/usmle-s...24-take-step-3-before-starting-residency.html
Now before residency when is the best time to take it?
There are three options:

Before the Match:
This is certainly helpful for old IMGs to boost their chances and also it's important for H1B Visa requirement.

While waiting for the Interview:
If you don't have something to do such as another major USMLE Step or clerkships then it's wise to make use of this time by preparing for the USMLE Step 3. It would be a nice thing to tell during the interview. However, be careful here; because if you tell them in the interview that you are preparing for Step 3 they'll likely ask you to report the score to them as soon as possible. In that case you have to pass and you have get a score synchronous with your Step 1 and CK scores. Otherwise, it won't be nice that you have 95 in CK and 80 in Step 3!

After Matching:
Match results is out in March (or even earlier in pre-match cases) and your job won't start until July. It's a great time to relax and prepare for Step 3 without being much stressful about it. You only need to pass and no need for high scores.

Step 3 exam

I am an old IMG, planning to give step 3 in august 2010.

Is it worthy to delay the exam till oct or nov 2010 so as to b able to appear for interviews during the same period?

Or should i stick to my decision of giving the exam in August itself?

If i need to mention about step 3 only during interviews - then isnt it good taht i give it just before the interviews rather than in august?
OR is that we need to mention about step 3 during ERAS application so it would be better to go for it in Aug?

Confused terribly..

If u r looking for H1B visa then u must do ur exam before the match.

In any circumstances doing it in August I think is better because it will increase your chances of getting an interview.

However, this has the disadvantage of unable to tell them that you are doing something good in the interview unless you will be doing some research or observership or externship or whatever.
