Hi everyone ,
I am an IMG and I failed in my final yr MBBS (failed in medicine by 2 marks and peds by 4marks) then after passing it the next time I took on USMLE step 1 in which I scored 99/233 .
My doubt is how much is the failed final year once going to hurt my chances for a residency .

It has less impact for IMGs

For AMGs, there's what's called MSPE which stands for "Med School Performance Evaluation".

The MSPE is released from the Medical School to all residency programs that the applicant apply for. In MSPE, they certainly mention all the good and bad things about a student and therefore a failure might affect the chances of getting residency.

For IMGs, usually they don't have MSPE and residency programs usually do not recognize med school evaluation by foreign countries, therefore, they rely more on USMLE Scores.

Your USMLE score has much higher impact than what you did in your MBBS. Am not saying that your final medical school transcript will not be seen, am saying it has less impact on your residency chances.

Let me put it this way, 80% for your USMLE score and 20% for your med school performance.

what if someone who didn't fail but didn't exactly do great in medschool
let's say about 3.00 gpa
can he compete for competitive residencies like general surgery & other competitive surgical specialties?

hey guys,

i studied in eastern europe... my transcript for my first few years is really rotten... i failed a load of classes and i didn't attend some classes (i was careless and i forgot to unregister to the classes when i could have, they were not mandatory just random optionals)... i didn't want to do medicine (was forced into it) until i was woken up with a nice summer experience working at a hospital in the summer. i got my priorities straight and i never failed again and did really well in my rotation years and scored pretty solid grades throughout the rest of my time there... i got some great clerkship experience in the US and in Canada (6 months combined) and now im heading into USMLE prep... i would like to know how bad my situation is before i start prepping for the steps.

years ago, i talked to my auncle (he's from pakistan) and he told me they don't care at all about transcripts... he's an oncologist in florida right now... he said that they don't even look at it... so that relaxed me... but now i read here that they do look at it...

am i screwed?

My school hasn't been recognized by the Cali board yet but it is not disapproved. I am supposed to graduate in 2017. I will take another year and a half off to complete USMLE steps and to do clinical rotations to obtain LORs. What are my chances of matching into a FM program if I get high USMLE scores and good LORs? Will those gaps affect my chances negatively?
