A 23-year-old man who recently emigrated from Costa Rica is admitted to the emergency department with seizures. Findings on examination of his cerebrospinal fluid are within the reference range. A CT scan of the head shows numerous cortical lesions with calcifications; some have surrounding edema. The life cycle of the parasite causing these lesions involves

A) the bite of a blackfly to human

B) the bite of a mosquito to human

C) the bite of a sandfly to human

D) passage through cows

E) passage through pigs

The only parasite that I can think of making cortical calcification is Toxoplasma and therefore I choose option E, transmission by pigs :eek:

Neurocysticercosis is a leading cause of seizures and epilepsy in the developing world and is an increasingly important health issue in the United States. Recent results from the Cysticercosis Working Group in Peru provide new evidence supporting the use of antiparasitic agents in highly selected patients with active cysts and seizures.

Cysticercosis is a parasitic infection that results from ingestion of eggs from the adult tapeworm, Taenia solium (T. solium). When cysticercosis involves the central nervous system, it is called neurocysticercosis. Neurocysticercosis is the most common parasitic infection of the brain and a leading cause of epilepsy in the developing world, especially Latin America, India, Africa, and China.
