Seems like you just started to listen to Goljan.Interesting thing about acromegaly that I learned today: both acromegaly and gigantism are caused by too much growth hormone. The difference between them is at what point in the development the excess growth hormone occurs.
If it's during infancy or childhood before fusion of the epiphyseal growth plates, you get gigantism, which is proportional overgrowth.
If it's during adulthood when the growth plates are already fused, you get acromegaly, which is disproportional overgrowth i.e. you get wider but not taller.
Leading cause of death in both gigantism and acromegaly is cardiac defects (Andre the Giant died from CHF).
Fun fact: Arnold Schwarzenegger has acromegaly because he took growth hormones when he was a body builder. Note the widening of the lower jaw (resulting in gaps between his teeth) and large hands!
