Hello Samin Yasir :)

Welcome to the forum and I'm really glad to see someone from my own country. I'm from Bangladesh too and I'll start my 3rd year from this January, which means I've given my 1st professional just this July. Could you please tell me which city/school are you from?

Hey I'm planning exactly the same thing, to sit the Step 1 after my 2nd professional but I don't know how practical is it given our medical schools don't have provisions for sitting the exam as a student. I have collected all the information regarding applying and sitting the exam and resources to prep for it, for which a good amount credit goes to this forum, but I am not sure on when would be the best time to schedule it.

I do hope any senior of ours joins us here and shed some light on this matter and give us some information more in context with our country's system.

Finally, again, I like to tell you that I'm delighted to see you here and I think it'll be helpful for both us if we kept in touch.

Hi again,

Actually our 2nd prof classes have started after our 1st professional ended in September and we're referred to as 'new' 3rd year here (whereas our immediately senior batch is called 'old' 3rd year), but in terms of duration of study I'm at the end of my 2nd year as I started the MBBS from January 2009...so ya, I'm in 2nd year but can be termed 3rd year! Its due to the new curriculum cause now we finish our 1st prof after 1 and 1/2 years instead of 2 years like our seniors. I think you're from the 2008 session or, are you from 2009 session? Oh and I'm from Chittagong, studying at the Institute of Applied Health Sciences, University of Science & Technology Chittagong (USTC). Have you of heard of it?

Passing the USMLE....hmm, I don't know, that's exactly what I want to find out as well. I wish there was someone from our senior batches, be a graduate or a student who sat the Step 1, who could give us a perspective as to how we should prepare in our system's context. But as far as I've read online, I think its a fairly passable exam but requires a lot of effort, determination and careful & smart planning to pass and even more to get a decent score.

I am trying to start off with Patho, Pharma & Micro from now and I think I've a good amount of catching up with Physio & Biochem. What about you? Have you collected the books and stuff for preparation. And also I'm a little concerned about the whole application & verification process. I don't know when to apply and how the institution is going to deal with the verification process cause not too many people here sit the USMLE, especially while still a student. Have you given thoughts about these?

Would like to hear more about you and your plans...Take Care!

Guys, I am not a student.. I have passed long ago in 2003, and after a lot of change of mind, I have finally took the step 1. I don't know if I would be of much help to you, cause I am not even familiar with the current curriculum of undergraduate courses. But here are some tips from my past experience with our education system and recent one with the step 1 exam -

1. Understanding the concept is number 1 priority, memorization is 2. This means read the mechanisms as much as you can. Must know all basics of pathology, pathogenesis, mode of action, pathways etc.

2. They will give you clinical set ups (vignettes) before asking the question. For those who have already passed MBBS and has some experience, the diagnosis is very easy, they actually give away the diagnosis. If you have just passed 1st prof, try to get familiar with the classic features of common diseases. They almost always use classic clues.

3. Kaplan is good once you already know the subject. But if you think you need a better platform to start with, read important chapters from Ganong (specially all the charts and figures, they love them) and Lippincott's biochem.

4. Get familiar with CT, MRI, Xrays, ECG and heart sounds.

5. Don't bother much about ethics. Kaplan + 150 cases. Most probably you will have to guess most of these questions.

6. Use the net for recent info. Whenever you think you need more info about a particular disease or condition or whatever, go through your books and also look up in the net. (I really shouldn't advise you guys about the net !!!)

7. Read the same thing over and over, again and again, instead of trying to memorize it.

8. MOST IMP: Solve questions... this will help you memorize, understand concepts and help you develop your own way of learning. Basically study the Kaplan books + Goljan once and then start solving as many questions as you can and plan your prep accordingly.

Good luck

Will it be feasible in the context of Bangladesh to prepare for the step 1 during internship. Does it contradict with fcps p1 prep? Any experience, seniors?

hi sakib... i m also from bangladesh... i have completed my intenship on last nov, 2012. & i have passed my FCPS part (internal medicine) 1 this january.... i m now doing training at DMC... ok, regarding ur question- during my interns i was preparing myself for USMLE... then i take a break for 4 moths to complete Devidson (1st time).. actually, during my part 1 exam i have answered 70 % questions from my USMLE residue... so, i think if u prepare urself for USMLE then u dont need to worry about Part 1... finally now, i m back & um preparing muself for step 1... now i get things quiet easier than before... as i m more oriented with devidson... so, i think... everything is inter-related ... so, dont think so much.. try to enjoy the knowledge.
thanks.
