PLz anybody knows anything would tell me, I'm an IMG starting my Step 1 study and planning to apply for 2013 match, i don't want to lose time and money for nothing.
Really? what I've heard about that there will be no place for the IMG the upcoming years due to increase of AMG and DO graduates???
on the other hand i hear that due to reform plans of Obama there will be huge increase in residencies specially IM and FM?

My personal opinion

Both of the information that you have is correct. There will be more AMGs and there will be more residency positions.
The real question is
Will the rise in AMGs match the rising need for physicians?
The answer to this question depends on many factors. Such as what will be the shape of the US economy by then, will the healthcare reform actually be implemented on the ground, will US grads be willing to join the less competitive specialties, ...etc

For a fact, the percentage of matching IMGs has been steadily decreasing over the last 5 years. (read this) and with 42.4% last year.

I personally think that the curve will bounce back to lower 50s within the next two years. Which means that your chance in 2013 is actually easier than this year!

Again, that depends on many factors. For example if you are looking for surgical specialties then the prognosis is grim but if you are willing to join primary care then you might be having great chances in the year 2013.

If you do decide to start preparing for USMLE then I urge you to join us here in this website as you'll find very useful information and you'll gradually be an expert in the matter. Also come back here to this thread and tell us what happened with you in the year 2013!

article

The health care bill didn't say anything about increasing the residency slots. Usually, the residency slots increases annually about couple of hundreds position but in the 2012, the situation will be the same, but about 4000 thousands extra AMG from MD and DO school are graduating due to the huge increase in the enrollment in 2007.

Here's an official article supporting this. Give me your thoughts guy. I might be wrong

The residency slots should be equally increasing.
Have a look at this article here

This year 2011-2012 will be the last year for prematch.

So I guess 2012-2013 will be much harder for IMG as programs will choose AMGs (which AMGs deserve since they are natives after all) as there are no more out-of-match positions...

Also surgery is much more competitive. IM and FM, especially, will be better choices for IMG unless u have strong connections

Even IM is highly competitive this match. For instance, for every 4 psychiatry invitations you receive, you'll get only 1 IM invitation. That's based on what my friends and I have noticed in this season (which I'm participating in).
