Hey, I'm going into my last year of med school and I'm planning on studying the USMLE step 2 internal medicine and general surgery along with my own curriculum, does that seem like a good plan? Also, should I be studying from any books other than kaplans USMLE notes? I also plan on taking step 1 after step 2, do I need any special books for that as well or will kaplans USMLE notes be enough?

Some people might argue that taking Step 2 before Step 1 is not a good idea.
Have a look here

Step 1 has many concepts that are crucial for your CK understanding.
However, many students have taken CK before Step 1 and they did just fine and so this is just an opinion.

As for your plan of reading from your own lecture notes and Kaplan notes that seems to be perfectly fine. But make sure to supplement your reading with as many practice questions as you can.
