Hi all,

I heard people talking that you do research or externships on J1, but what after that visa ends and you go back home? Do you wait 2 years till you go to the match?? Is this the only visa allowed?

Also, what about those who get prelims? If they are on a J1, it ends by the end of the prelim year, right? do they wait 2 years till they apply for advanced???

J1 Visa sponsorship

The J1 Visa is sponsored by the ECFMG and it can be as long as 7 years. They usually give you enough time to finish your training. So for example you can apply for extension after you finish your transitional year. However, please remember that very few programs allow J1 sponsorship for a transitional year.

Then what visa are you on? Is that why preliminaries are hard for IMGs?

I was always thinking, If someone wants neuro or radio for example..What if he only matches this year for a prelim/transitional...what about next year? will he go back home? or what should his visa status be?

May be that really why many IMGs end up in IM or FM rather than any other field?
