Who's Authorized to sign the medical school forms for the ECFMG?

hi sabio,

need help again. so my forms went through, then i got an email about 2 weeks ago that they received my forms and were processing it. then a week later (last week) i got another email (which i only recently saw!!) that they cannot process it due to this reason:

If you are a medical school student, your Certification of Identification Form (Form 186) must be signed and dated, in ink, by an authorized official of the medical school in which you are enrolled. The official’s formal title and institution must also be listed. English translations must be provided for all information that is not in English.

.. they have asked me to resend in the 186 form. so where did i go wrong? i got the lecturer who is registered with the ECFMG web portal to sign the form. isnt she the official who should sign it? these lecturers of mine dont know who else should be the one to sign it. or is it that they didnt sign it right? something else missing for instance. any advice?:toosad:

The most common reason for this is that you medical school has been signing the form by another individual. The ECFMG keeps a continuous record of who's signing the form in each medical school. If you were "unlucky" by being the first to have the form signed by a person that has not been signing the form before then they'll question the authenticity and the validitiy.
Another reason, is that your lecturers are not having a registrar's or dean's title. The signature should arise from someone in the dean office or the school's registrar. In any case your medical school should be fully aware of this issue.

So here' the plan for you;
-Contact your school and ask them who has been signing the form before and let him/her sign your form. If this is the first time your school is doing this then your school should contact ECFMG directly and tell them that person XYZ is the authorized person.

-If the above fails then you have to contact the ECFMG yourself and ask them where to go from here. Mind you that you may need to call several times before you can get a reasonable logical answer.

ok thanks

yeah im the first in the uni who is taking this exam. so i naturally got the lecturer who is registered with the ECFMG WP to sign the forms. I will ask her tomo to call the ECFMG directly and tell them that she will be the authorized official. she has never aliased with them directly but only through the Web Portal. So perhaps thats where the problem lies. Will see how that goes.

thanks

Hi Seetal

The case happening to u is the same as that happened for me.
I am also the first one who has decided to take USMLE. When I decided to take USMLE right after my graduation almost all of my classmates were making my jokes and telling me that we are a third world country and it's impossible for us to pass this hard exam and be a physician that could be equal to an American physician, however, I did not listen to them and went ahead. And now when I had a victory, most of them have also started the preparation now and now I am the only one in my country to guide our local physicians about USMLE.

My forms were also rejected :( the first time because I signed them by my dean , but he was not authorized by ECFMG. Then I called ECFMG and they told me that the only person from my medical school who is authorized by ECFMG is the chancellor of my university. Then I signed my form by the chancellor and it was then accepted and considered valid by ECFMG.

Please call ECFMG and ask them who is the authorized official of your university? I am sure they are going to tell u as they told me.

Wish u successfully completing ur registration process and afterward having a wonderful test result. :)
Go Ahead :p

well as it turns out, im not the first in my uni to take the exam. last yr a former student of my uni wanted to take the exam and she too registered and got someone from the uni to sign it. luckily a secretory remembered that it was the dean. so i checked if it is the same dean this yr and went ahead and posted it. then i tot i should confirm so i called ECFMG and they said if the dean is changed then its a problem but otherwise its ok. but they cant tell me the dean's name (i find this weird but nvm:rolleyes:)

then ECFMG sent me an email (because i also requested help via email) and they said that they have sent my uni a form requesting all the names of the people that can be authorized to sign it!! thats just awesome. so now i can ask my uni to directly alias with them and my step 2ck registration later will be a breeze. which got me thinking for a bit (why didnt i just go ahead and register for step2ck at the same time?????!!!) sigh... :p

I am also the first one to do USMLE in my uni.

Dear Dr Elham,
I am also in the same situation you were when you graduated. I am the first who decided to do usmle too. now i dont know where to start. Let me ask you a question. Did your med school notify ECFMG that the chancellor is the authorized official? in other words , Did they have his name which was sent by the med school? or did they just tell you the chancellor is the only to sign?
in my case, my med school has just been added to IMED and there is no EMSWP account for the med school and there have never been a list sent to ecfmg about the authorized officials.
So now should I just call ECFMG and ask who is authorized? what is next please help me.

The case happening to u is the same as that happened for me.
