Kaplan Step 1 Lecture Notes says glucagon increase insulin secretion, this seems counterintuitive. Can anyone share your thoughts?

Well, the best way to answer a question is to get you to think it through yourself...

What is the point of gluconeogensis and glycogenolysis? It's to raise the fuel source for the body. How is the fuel (glucose) then put into the cells?

because insulin is needed for glucose transport if I recall correctly.

You guys are right.

Glucagon increase liver Glucogenolysis, ketogenesis, ureagenesis, lypolisys. In order to do that it needs to get into the liver, for the glucagon to do that it needs insulin to get into the liver, this is why glucagon needs to increase Insulin secretion.

Hi guys....putting it in a much simpler way; During hypoglycemia glucagon is stimulated ----> glucagon makes sugar ----> sugar is in the blood BUT As we all know sugar by it self wont be taken up by the cell ----> Insulin then is called in to push it into the cell....

Note: The ONLY special case were insulin is not required to push in the sugar is the actively working muscle. correct me if am mistaken...

Reg the counter regulatory action of Glucagon for Insulin

The ff are the counter regulatory hormones....
Glucagon
Cortisol
Growth hormone
Epinephrine

These hormone levels will be high if the Insulin level is low....
The reason is quite simple ....becoz to maintain the blood glucose level in homeostatis ...... if they are nt opposite in action, then ppl would always remain in hypoglycemic world!!

glucagon enhance hepatic glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis ....both of these mechanisms will increase blood glucose level .........this increase will lead to increase secretion of insulin ......

Choose that glucagon raises insuline ...and you guys will get CERO points for that.
The explanations u give are not valid. Those are justifications for the missense of kaplan.

The increase in insuline is because the raising in glucose. ...but glucose can be raisen by many things.
Be careful.

Totaly agree with chemole.....glucagon has nothing to do with stimulating insulin by it self. Its all about the sugar, they are two totaly opposite to each other. By comon sense how come glucagon stimulates its counter hormone, if so then non will be produced as they will eliminate each other at the moment they are released.....Sugar Babe;everybody runs after her, take it like that?!?!!?
