Yale Clinical Electives!

19030 Views 17 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Rowena
hi everyone I am a medical student and applied fro a clinical elective at Yale and got one in plastic surgery but the problem now is that as a residency in surgery for IMGs is out of question and I want a residency in internal med, would this elective help me to get one?

Does an ivy league elective have an advantage, even if in another specialty?

At what time of the year is step 1 and 2 offered?

If an elective is done after final year exams but before the announcement of results, would that be considered an elective?

Please help me out ASAP I have tickets to confirm

An elective at Yale is fantastic but it will not help at all for your IM application because it's surgical :(

USMLE exams are available on most day of the years except weekends, holidays, special two weeks off once in a year.

Anything you do before you get your Diploma is considered elective clerkship and it won't be considered externship.

you have no idea how thankful i am for your help.:happy:thank you:)

I had some more questions

what if I do an elective in internal med too but not an ivy league in addition to this elective?how much will this improve my chances of a residency in either intrnl med or surgery?

and does plastics elective make me a good candidate fro a general surgery residency too?

Surgical Electives will help you get Surgical residencies. Even if it was subspecialty plastic it will help you enormously when you apply for general surgery.
Likewise, medical electives will help you get medical residencies.

The important point here. Is that when time comes for your ERAS application you use the electives LOR appropriately.
Hafu ,

Hi Hafu, Good morning . . Yup, Can you give me a sign, How to get an elective, and the requirements that should be fulfilled.? :)) Thanks hafu,

well first you need to go the Yale med school site and type visiting students in the search space and they have all the details there. but I want to tell you that the tuition is $2500 and housing is $1000 plus other living expenses........so think about this before considering it but if this doesn't bother u then go ahead :) and look it up at the site and if u still have any questions I'll answer them.

Hey Hafu23 and lee-uslme,

I, too, am an international medical student considering the possibility of applying for an elective at Yale. I was wondering if you have any idea as to what the application deadline is?

Right now I'm doing an international exchange program in Paris (I'm from Portugal) and considering all the documents I have to put together with my international relationships bureau back home + taking the TOEFL etc I don't think I'd be ready to send in an application before the end of June.

Arrgh I hate the fact that I didn't think of this earlier, lol.

Anyway, I would really appreciate your input. I'm mainly looking for internal medicine (cardiology, GI) electives and would like to take them in October-December 2010.

Thank you!

But be Aware Guys!!
Yale receded significantly in Primary care!!
It is ranked 87th in Primary care for 2010 year!!
Think of that before you pay 2500$
(If you can afford 2500$, Harvard is too much better than yale with 3000$)

HI,
umm, it wont be possible for you to send in your application by the end of June because collecting documents, TOEFL, correspondence with the electives co-coordinators all takes time, so I would suggest that you apply now for an elective to be taken up at least 4 months later. For instance If you wish to apply for an elective during the month of December apply now. that's what I did. and do go ahead! :) if you have any more queries, I'll be happy to answer.
Harvard clinical electives?

Does Harvard require Step1 score? They don't say it officially, which means you can get the offer without Step1? They say they will interview you by phone, which means you don't need to renew your Toefl? And how does a clinical elective in Harvard help me to get into a residency more than a clinical elective at the institution I apply for residency?
Thanks a whole lot.
will elective in radio help for IM

hello,
i too an an international student. I have applied for clinical electives in U.S, Yale being one of the places. whenever it was required to give multiple choices, i gave the last 2-3 choices in radiology [nuclear medicine, vascular and interventional radiology etc]. The logic behind my choice was that IM is very competitive for electives, and I wanted some back up. Amongst all subjects Radio seemed closest to IM, in some ways at least and that's why I did that. Did I do the right thing? if I get a radio elective, will it help me for IM residency? kindly help.
Hi.
I am also interested for applying at yale. But i have heard from some of my friends that yale faculty do not give letters of recommendations even on request. If such is the case is their any use of applying there ? Please tell if anyone knows anything about it.
if u still have any questions I'll answer them.
i am hoping you are still answering queries about this, i really need your help

i am also an img. i am applying to yale right now, as in filling out the forms and i was wondering since you have already done it, you could guide me.
do they necessarily require toefl or can it be waived?
what are chances of getting an elective in cardiac surgery?
what is the best time to apply?
in their form, they ask for the number of patients you have examined? any idea about how to fill this up? we dont keep a tab of our patients and we have had clinicals for more than three years now!

thanks in advance for your help!!

I am basically from India, currently studying in Ukraine.
I want to apply for August-September period.
I think I'm late for this period so thinking about to apply through some agencies. And I have some clinics in my mind like Mayo clinic, Weil cornel, Mt. Sinai but don't have any information about their acceptance rate and have to apply asap.
If you want then we can find out togather.Thank you.

Well, I haven't given my step1 and mayo requires step1.
That's all that I know of.
And most other universities require step 1 too. I only know about Harvard and Yale which do not require step1.
I would love to work together. Tell me how to contact you.

Hi rid547

I have come accross your last year post when seeing threads about Yale electives. I am applying this year.
Do you mind helping me out with some of the queries. I have similar to the ones you mentioned in your post.

I am also an International medical student. Completed TOEFL & Step 1. I am applying to yale right now.

I am interested in Internal Medicine so wish to apply for Cardiology & Gastroenterology electives. What are my chances of getting these electives? Or do you have any idea which IM electives are better to apply for to secure a spot?
Also same as in your post "in their form, they ask for the number of patients you have examined? any idea about how to fill this up? we dont keep a tab of our patients and we have had clinicals for more than three years now!"

Thank you in advance for taking your time to help.
