I'm an IMG from the US (from SGU). I passed Step 1 with a score of 211 on my second attempt. What are my chances at getting matched? I don't care where it is, but probably psych or family med if those are the easiest for me...

Hello msmbc,

What was the speciality you chose whenever you began (or while in) medical school? Could you give us a little more insight into your application - (STEP 2CK/CS/Research History/Volunteer History).

Hi MMP,

I am interested in psychiatry, but would not mind going into family practice if it is easier to get in. I am just in the beginning of third year, so have not yet taken Step 2 CK or CS. I plan on doing behavioral research after my shelf and have no other experience other than in college I had hospice volunteering and undergraduate research publications.

Hope this answers your question. Please tell me what you think my chances are of getting matched. I really don't care where I go, even the worst program is okay lol. Where do you put my chances? Bad prognosis?

Hello there - I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the prognosis is not good. A failure on Step 1 is a big red flag. Your second attempt was still low in regards to the score. You'll be facing thousands and thousands of applicants with 230+ on Step 1 on their first attempt. Unless you have a deep connection to a program through clinical/research fellowships, it will be an expensive attempt to match.

My suggestion is to take Step 2CK and try to nail it out of the park. A very high Step 3 will also help. Then, you create a story that you have overcome the challenges of demonstrating clinical knowledge. Of course, observerships in the U.S. and any research will be helpful.
