Hello! I got the results today - 192. I am very disappointed with this result. Tell me if I have any chance of becoming a US resident with my score ? If yes - what should I do for this?

Of course you can, stay positive and do well on your next exams. Dont listen to Pasha, thats just very negative for someone to say that. I have a friend who got residency with a 185, it all depends on your résumé as a WHOLE, and your interview as well. A lot of things come into place, so just keep your head up, and keep moving forward. Your hard work will pay off.

Wait a min, isn't 192 the passing score for step 1? How can someone possibly get residency with 185? Am I missing something here?
Now coming to the real talk. There are two sides of this situation. Realistically speaking, 192 is not an awesome score to have in the kind of competition there is these days. BUT, and that's a HUGE BUT, it's not the end of the world. You still have a chance! A chance that's just equivalent to being burried under a mountain that you need to dig to avail. Meaning, you need to work very hard to make a strong overall application, get high CK scores, pass CS on first attempt, try to pass step 3 too and get a high score on that, fetch some USCE, if possible some research, keep your target of one specialty let's say family medicine and work your CV well directed towards that specialty. Whats your year of graduation by the way? If recent, that's a positive. If not, again you need to work harder on the other aspects of your CV. That being said, if you can do all this, you can definitely convert your "negligible chances" into "high chances". Nobody in the world can predict what your chances are. It's in your own hands. To create the chances. Also we don't know your personal life situation. It really depends on whether you can give enough time & focus to the hard work you need to do to create your chances. Good luck! |

Dont be discouraged, the USMLE score is not the only thing you need for residency but its still extremely vital.
Have you taken step 2ck. you want to get at least a 230 on step 2 to prove that you are competitive. I ll recommend smashusmle.com if you are interested. Also get strong letters of recommendations. all the best. Quote:

Thank you all for answers.I almost gave up because I heard that during match programs filtered all appapplicants with a score below 220, it is not true?
I will do anything for a high score in step 2. Now im 5th year student, so I have enough time to pass and receive 2 step and get LOR. I want to pass step 3 immediately after graduation , before sending documents. You can recommend me program for take strong LOR? |

It all depends where you want to go, again if you don't have the connections to pull it off, which some people have (lets say, 20% of applicants) then you have to work hard on your CV, step 2 of course and cs. Again, don´t expect Harvard or Standford but there are many programs out there. Also, it is true about the filtering applications per scores, many doctors have told me that (yes, actual doctors) but again you should never loose faith and work hard, thats the most important thing.
