Methanol poisoning is dangerous because it can metabolize to formic acid. This causes anion-gap acidosis and is toxic.
But this got me thinking: why can't metabolism of ethanol, to acetic acid, cause anion gap acidosis? and why isn't acetic acid toxic? I mean, obviously it's not toxic, since it's ubiquitous in the body. But, why isn't it, from a biochemical perspective? |

Thank you very much for your reply.
I wrote up this fact, and a lot of other details about methanol toxicity, in this blog post. I hope that you will read it and find it helpful. |
