Q. can anyone explain,
why TIBC/Transferrin decreases in anemia of chronic disease?Thanks. |

In ACD, think of the body as trying to "hide" Iron away from the infectious agent. Pathogens use Iron to their advantage, so we have evolved this defense system to store it away.
Because of this: Ferritin (storage) is HIGH Transferrin/TIBC (transport/available) is LOW If the Transferrin were high (the opposite of what is actually true), then there would be Iron floating around in the vasculature and available to pathogens. Therefore, it's all shifted to Ferritin for storage. Think of transferrin as the available form of Iron. |
