Default The US Election and IMGs

Hello colleagues from all around the world I apologize in advance for the bizarre topic, but I am looking for some honest opinions here.

I have a peculiar question: How do you think the current change in political power in the USA might affect our chances of matching to a specialty as non-USA residents or visa holders? Do you think it will impact us negatively? I realize that it is impossible to predict such a trend, but I just wanted to hear out peoples' opinions and ideas before I make up my mind about going forward with my application. I am just really worried that for those of us, whose applications are still pending, tonight's election outcome might have an extremely negative impact...Applying for a residency to the USA is extremely time consuming and expensive (as all of you very well know) and I am wondering if right now our chances did not decrease exponentially...Please share your thoughts, much appreciated

Since the new president of the USA stated that he will stop the J1 visa program and also reform the H1B I suppose that in the future it will become much more difficult to match if you are an IMG. Now, for those whose application are pending, I have no idea how and if it will affect them.

They need us just as much as we need them.

The senate was already Republican, there being a new president isn't going to change the fact that the US needs doctors. If they didn't need us, they wouldn't be allowing us in - in the first place.

Plus, Trump has actually said in the presidential debates that he has no problem with people who embrace the American way of life, and he has also said that he doesn't think foreign students should be kicked out of the US, because the country needs "very smart people" (his words).

Im in the last instances of my prep for STEP 1 and will take the exam starting this next year anyway, but yea today i can't stop thinking abut that.

Also it may sound cynical but i have to said it, do you think that in case that the new goverment influences negatively in the possibilities to match for a residency program, it will only affect IMG form middle easter countries? o from IMGs all around the world?

I think prejudice against middle eastern countries will escalate enormously, unfortunately. Not in the medical field, because doctors from those places are already respected. But visa-wise, I can see some extra screenings and other nonsense.

I am also in the middle of my Step 1 preparation, I am from Eastern Europe. Exactly like you I was shocked all day yesterday and was wondering whether I should quit or continue...I am so worried that we will spend all this time, money and enormous efforts on our part and then bam! all of a sudden, all will be in vain due to impossible visa restrictions. My boyfriend also says that doctors should not be affected as we are highly skilled work force after all but who knows. I guess we should just not give up and continue, I just don't see what else we could do at this point.

I for one, came from the PI, a bit worried but, let us cross the bridge when we get there.. As my closest uncle always told me "To worry of something uncertain is energy wasted" hence, I think I will worry about that a bit later. But, I do not think will be impossible to get, for one the flow of which will be controlled by well, the consuls and the embassy. Secondly, Congress and the Senate needs to convene for any changes to be done, it will be awhile for that. Lastly, the New president stated "illegals", as I recall J1/ H1B aren't tagged as illegals, if one follows by the rules/laws which govern the visa. As long as, you are law abiding, all is good.

Just my 2 cents.
