Calculating the Pulmonary Vascular Resistance!
A 75-year-old man is admitted to the ICU after aortic valve surgery. A pulmonary artery catheter yields the following data: central venous pressure (CVP) 5 mmHg, cardiac output (CO) 4.0 L/min, mean arterial pressure (MAP) 80 mmHg, mean pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) 26 mmHG, pulmonary artery occlusion pressure (PAOP) 10 mm Hg, and heart rate of 80. What is this personís pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR)?
A. 40 dynes-sec/cm5
B. 320 dynes-sec/cm5
C. 160 dynes-sec/cm5
D. 220 dynes-sec/cm5
E. 410 dynes-sec/cm5
i guess the answer is
B. 320 dynes-sec/cm
Using the formula PVR = 80 x (MPAP - PAOP ) / CO
ya its B. 320 dynes-sec/cm5
normally we measure pressure in mmhg/l/min but if its given in dynes-sec/cm5...u just hv to multiply mmhg/l/min value with 80...
now multiply with 80...
then its 320 dynes-sec/cm5...:)
