Welcome to USMLE Forums!

There are different approaches for taking the USMLE.

Some prefer starting with Step 1 and some prefer starting with Step 2 CK.

Have a look at this poll
http://www.usmle-forums.com/general-...ake-first.html

As far as time adjustment and study plans please look at our
Recommended USMLE Step 1 Threads
There you can see good study plans and time needed for Step 1

As for the electives, yes you can do electives in USA before your graduation
Have a look at our dedicated Clerkships Forum

hi there

just to add.

a friend of mine already in the US said letter of recommendations are given out fairly easily to elective students compared to observerships or externships students. so i strongly recommend u do ur electives before u graduate.

some places for electives require u to have taken ur step 1 n some don't. but if they do , then take ur step 1 first. it might take u 10 months to a yr to prepare. but its worthwhile postponing ur graduation a little just so u can do ur electives. because once u have done ur electives n ur step 1, u can take ur step 2 next yr n follow in the MATCH for 2012!! :) plus u will have higher chances of getting matched as u will have great LORs. LORs are very very important as far as i've been told. u need at least 4.

Perhaps u can look into the electives forum page. there are heaps of discussion on this there. so many choices. all depends on u.

I contacted NIH n they take students too. NIH is a great place to start n get LORs.
