Hi guys,
I'm attending the 5th year of medicine in Italy and I want to apply for USMLE, but I cant study during my degree program, because of the exams I have to do. In your opinion, how long does it take to study, from "a ground zero preparation", for step I, considering my English is at a low-medium level? Should I have to start just now during my graduation? I think it will not be possible. And thinking about step 2 and 3? What can you tell me about? How long does it take to prepare the whole USMLE? 1,5 year for an Italian student could be feasible? Last qstn...how much time I have to wait, after completing USMLE, to apply for residency match? I've just read online you can do match one year later you have done the entire USMLE...is it true??!....please help me... I want to do maxillofacial surgery in USA, and I have to attend also the 4-year dentistry program degree before I can do maxillo residency...so, in front of the long period I have to face, Im very dispirited right now. Please, answer to my questions...bye...Pierluigi |

Hi there,
Welcome to USMLE Forums. The duration of USMLE preparation varies considerably from student to another, your post shows that you have good English so I don't think that's a barrier in your case. I would guess that one year of full dedication will get you through all the exams. However you can get more insights by looking at these polls; http://www.usmle-forums.com/usmle-st...-step-1-a.html http://www.usmle-forums.com/usmle-st...step-2-ck.html Once you pass Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 2 CS and in a matter of 2 weeks you will receive your ECFMG certificate which then makes you eligible for medical residency in the US. You don't need to wait one year. However, you mentioned that you are interested in Maxillofacial Surgery, this specialty is not a medical specialty, it's a dental specialty, you have to finish dental school (DDS degree) to be eligible for Maxillofacial surgery residency. You don't need to do USMLE for that purpose. I also recommend you check the Italy- tag link at the bottom of this thread to connect with Italian USMLE students. Good luck - |

where are you planning on doing your dental degree? italy or US? I have no idea how it works in the US but you are right about Italy, it would take only 4 years, same as in Austria (where I am from) |
