Thank you all guys
my prep got serious in late August, so it took me roughly 4-5 months of hard studying. The only exception is goljan (book+audios) which I had already studied during my last year of med school. From late august to mid October I went through all Kaplan notes along with the videos. I've found that watching the videos speeded up my reading as it forced me to keep the pace of 1 subject per week that I had planned. I believe that for all fresh graduate or even med students the pace that I kept is a reasonable one, but I understand it can be harder for older applicants who are not so fresh on the subjects this exam deals with. While watching the videos I used to keep open both the notes and first AID, so that I could add all the missing information and relevant details to first aid. The idea here is that after having watched a video and read its corresponding pages on Kaplan I would never go through it NEVER AGAIN, just stick to FIRST AID and the extra notes that I had taken on it. Btw, after finishing kaplans I purchased a 2 months subscription to usmleWorld. Everybody says this is the best qBank out there, so I thought why should I subscribe to other qBanks??? I finished it in early December, only did 46 mixed-unused questions blocks, final result was 75%. My advice is to use it as a learning tool, so I wrote down everything new that I was learning from it. At this point I took NMBE 12 and got 257. I was planning to give my exam in mid December but I have underestimated the time it takes for ECFMG to process one's application, so I could not take an appointment any earlier than January the 15th. In the last month I just went over and over again through first aid and took NBME 13 and 15, scoring 240 and 253 respectively. Exam day: I could not sleep at all, but when I got to the test center I was not feeling tired, epinephrine surge was quiet high I guess ![]() I felt uneasy during the whole exam, the biggest problem I had was the length of questions. I was able to hardly finished every block in the last minute of allotted time, which had never happened to me in the NBMEs. After the exam I felt like I had underperformed, as I got out of the center I soon realized I had 5 easy straight forward questions wrong and started feeling guilty. Time was a major issue in my exam. The result turned out to be 251, when I started my prep I set my goal at >240, so i'm super happy I broke the 250 wall. Just one more personal advice: if you are feeling low during your prep, just go and watch some video on YouTube from Eric Thomas, it helped me a lot. |

hey pal Marco1988 thank you so much for sharing exp so frankly.
1.u just gave kaplan notes 1 read? 2.how many revisions did you give to 1st aid? 3.is it better to note the new things from uworld separately or on 1st aid? 4.what about pathoma with its videos?will it be sufficient to face the music? reply to these questions will be of immense help. |

2- countless, while doing qs on Uworld whenever I encountered a concept I was not 100% sure of I went back to first aid and review it. For example question about statins, went back reviewing all drugs for dislipidemia 3- think it is to one's own preference 4- I didn't use pathoma just because I had already studied goljan. I believe most of different books available are equivalent one to another, just study smart and you'll be fine Most importantly, this exam is doable. Don't listen to people claiming to study 12 hours/day for several months. Don't isolate yourself from your friends, don't give up sports and so on. |

i move to chicago in may and started straight to work ....after few month, i finally started my preparation from mid july when i left my job. initially it was hard being new migrant here. what i did was i started reading kaplan line by line ... and goljan ...i studied goljan every day and then kaplan ...first aid on weekend... before decemeber i had completed reading all twice. i did question for next 15 days all what ever i got. and then again i sat for final revision of kaplan and goljan and f aid.. which i was able to revise once more before my exam.
friends what i found was reading multiple time from books and making concept clear is the key...because the question they ask is on the basis of what you have understood.i did NBME 15 in nov before starting my studies to know where i fall. since i had some residual knowledge from my previous studies. i got 210. there after i did only offline NBME, where i was able to make about 7-8 error per block. what helped me the most was the concept earned from after studying without skipping a word. its not a big deal ... now sitting for CK all the best guys... |

You should bring your scheduling permit + a photo ID with your signature... i took 2 ID's just incase. Yes they give you two headphones. 1 is for the media and one is for noise reduction. I took my own pair of ear plugs but didn't end up using them. To be honest managing break time is totally up to you. the only way to really manage time is to use the time u need ... don't wait around if you don't need to... the sign in process takes time and unfortunately that comes out of your break time. i personally started off the day by doing 2 blocks back to back and then divided my remaining break time evenly. i kept 20 mins of my time for lunch and this was taken before my last 2 blocks. Also they have clocks in the other room so just check the time there. Another headsup for you is that you are not allowed to eat in the registration room and you have to leave that room to go out and eat. There should be a designated eating area. GOODLUCK ON YOUR EXAM!! |
