Default hours studying per day?

I have a question: when people say they spend, or you HAVE to spend X number of hours studying per day during dedicated period-- does that include 5/10 minute breaks (per hour), or are these small breaks subtracted from the amount? I've come across a lot of people who study a great number of hours per week, but they never mention whether the 5 minute breaks between pomodoros (par example) count or not.
