ObGyn Couvelaire Uterus

Couvelaire uterus is a condition in which blood extravasate from the retroplacental space in cases of abruptio placenta into the uterine muscles.

It's a life threatening condition and happens only in advanced cases of placental abruption.

Grossly the uterus may look red purple because of the blood in the myofibrils.

The blood may actually make its way to the peritoneal cavity.

The other name for Couvelaire uterus is Uteroplacental Apoplexy.

Couvelaire uterus may appear in CK questions as an option to pick up in an abruptio placenta clinical vignette.
