Hello all-

First time user of this forum. A lot of spread with the data here, so I went through all the data, collected it into a master file, and ran some correlations. See the attached images and data file.

I focused on UWorld first pass percent correct, UWSA, and NBME. For UWSA I recorded the data no matter when the assessment was taken. However, I only ran the correlation for UWSA scores <265, since it seems to max at that value and that would skew things. For NBME, I only used assessments taken near to the actual exam date, and generally did not include NBME form 7. Not super scientific here, folks. The correlation thus will most hold for you if you are taking a non-form 7 NBME close to your exam date. The line of identity is indicated by the dashed line (i.e., if the assessment perfectly predicted actual score).

A few findings:
-Small sample size with restriction of range effects and clearly a selection bias wrt who posts on this site.
-There's a lot of variability (see the R2 values).
-An individual test is helpful in ballparking, but do not assume that will be your score.
-For UWSA, it tended to overestimate scores above 240 but underestimate below that cutpoint.
-For NBME, it tended to underestimate scores across most of the range, and became unreliable above 260.
-For UWorld first pass %, I was surprised at the strength of correlation, but still tons of variability there! Hard to say how this data applies at the individual level, since many folks use UWorld at different times / in different ways. However, if you're getting 75%+ on your first pass you are in good shape for a score >240. If you're getting 65%+, most scored >220.

Hope this is helpful. Now I need to get back to studying...

Best,
Jesse

Hi Jesse, I am super worried because I took NBME 6 a couple of weeks ago and got a 258, were very confident, then today, 5 days before my exam, I took UWSA 1 and it turned out to be 246, 12 points below. Based on your data, where would my score range be? What should I do in the last 5 days?

Can't say in percentage but I had marked 10-12 questions per block and overall most questions won't seem similar to uworld and are confusing. I was devastated at the end of the test. Just trust your knowledge and uwsa score. It all depends on application of everything you know. As long as you understand all uworld concepts, it should be fine.

In my case UW was not enough. FA and FA Q &A helped a lot.

Here is the detail.
I started CK study with UW and took first NBME after I finished UW twice and found the score was much lower than I expected (6 weeks out, 228).
So I again solved incorrect questions in UW, and then took next NBME but the score was almost the same (4 weeks out, 230).
I was so shocked! I analyzed the questions I missed and found that I sometimes even did not know simple questions, which led me to FA Q & A.
FA Q & A is relatively easy, but still there were a lot of questions I couldn't answer correctly.
I went through FA Q & A and FA in around 10 days and took UWSA, finally I scored 262.

In my opinion, UW is very good and deals with difficult questions but does not have basic parts which people should know before they start UW. I graduated from my medical school long time ago and have been working on my specialty so I have forgotten a lot of basic knowledge. I think if I had started the study with FA Q & A then gone to UW, I could have save the time.

My suggestion is taking NBME in the early point and analyze what type of questions you missed and figure out how you can improve. If you find yourself having weakness in easy and basic parts (like me), I suggest to finish easy qbank first and make sure that you understand almost all of them.

Hope it helps. Good luck.

Honestly, I felt that step 2 ck was more difficult than step 1! I know that I definitely got a higher percentage of questions wrong on step 2 than I did on step 1, even though I scored better on step 2 (260 step 1 vs 274 step 2). I never expected a >270 grade! Step 2 ck definitely wasn't as easy as most people claim, though the studying itself was easier (no biochemistry!).

Given your NBMEs and UWorld 1st pass (I also did 85%), you'll most likely do well. Good luck!

Thanks for the encouragment. I definitely felt Step 2 much more difficult than step 1. Even though no one believed me when I said this. I had a 271 on the step 1 but some residents told me that I should not get a lower score on the CK since it looks bad on your CV.

I liked first aid for step 2 and step 2 secrets. For every new system I would read over secrets first then brush up on the details with first aid for step 2. Then I'd take the relevant blocks in UWorld. The biggest amount of studying was spent just reading the heck out of every single UWorld answer. That's really where I learned the most.

I squeezed UWorld for every last word! I used Kaplan lecture notes, MTB and Step up to medicine, but didn't finish any of them, just chose some subjects to do. I looked at what area I was weak in in UWolrd and then studied more based on that.

Result timing and NBME Predictive Value

UWSA 1 (April 12) - 205
UWSA 2 (May 15) - 238
NBME 6 (May 26)- 205
UWORLD- 69%

Test Experience: Walked out of the exam feeling like a total idiot. I ran out of time in every block and randomly guessed on all of the biostat questions without reading them.

***IMPORTANT- I know many friends did terribly or failed the NBMEs before the exam and then ended up with 240-250 on the real thing. I found the NBMEs to be incredibly predictive of my Step 1 score, but they seemed to be very unreliable for CK. I know its great to have a guide on how you are doing, but please be careful- the NBME can shatter your confidence and prevent you from taking the exam sooner.

I know its great to have a guide on how you are doing, but please be careful- the NBME can shatter your confidence and prevent you from taking the exam sooner.

bravo!! this is like a doable thing. mostly people post too high scores in every assessment they take and of course the exam itself.. you guys are extraordinary.
but its good to see some average people around here :) like us..

So as you will see by my scores, I am definitely not the best student. I am a Caribbean Medical School student and I took my exam between my 3rd and 4th years. I studied about 3 months for the exam and mostly just did UWorld. I read Step Up to Medicine during my IM rotation in 3rd year but did not really use it during Step 2 prep. I studied about 7 hours a day, 5-6 days a week, and took about 3 weeks off. My days mostly consisted of taking and going over UWorld sections, which took me forever. It took me about 4-5 hours to carefully go thru 44 UWorld questions. I also watched Emma Holliday videos during the last week leading up to my exam. I also used them for SHELF prep during my 3rd year and found them very helpful.

Step 1- 213
NBME 4 490 ? 235 ? 29 wrong ? 3 months out
NBME Comp (our school made us take this) 215 ? 2 months out
NBME 6 440 ? 225 ? 32 wrong ? 1 month out
NBME 7 420 ? 221 ? 45 wrong ? 1.5 weeks out
UWSA 234 ? 1 week out
Free 150 - 85.1% - 3 days out
Real Deal - 237

The biggest thing I can say is to trust yourself and your test scores on test day. I know a lot of people say this and it is much easier said than done (trust me) but try as hard as you can. After my test I spent the next couple weeks just looking thru forums about what to do if you fail Step 2 and when you can retake it and all of that. The real exam felt harder and just different than all of the practices so I thought there was no way I would pass nonetheless score about what I did in my practices.

Last thing, I got my score at about 2:45 pm the day of score reporting so do not freak out if you don?t get it in the morning.

I really hope this helps

I am also very tense dont know if ill pass.. i hope i get a good score in couple of weeks.. :(

So im an IMG from africa (won't say which country :))) I still have one more year to go in med school. Took my my step 1 in 2015 and scored mid 230s. I took my step2ck this year and got my results a week ago so i decided to share my experience.

I used MTB2 for my studies and UWORLD. and supplemented with other books obviously. Used lecturio for certain topics ( not bad).

NBME 3 (8 weeks out) - 226
NBME 6 ( 4 weeks out) - 239
NBME 7 ( 10 days out) - 245

UWorld 1st pass - 63%
UWorld 2nd pass - 84% random, 40 per block, timed

UWSA1 - 2 weeks out - 268
UWSA2 -1 week out -257:confused:

As usual it wasn't easy sleeping the night before, woke up in the morning feeling sleep deprived and had no appetite for breakfast. What an unwanted bad start to the big day. Anyways, finished all my blocks with 4-6 minutes left on the clock and surprisingly didn't have any issues.

Real deal - 266

2 CK

I'm an IMG from Europe.
Years since graduation: 1
I scheduled my step 2 ck 5 months after I wrote step 1 (253). I deeply recommend everybody to keep the period between step 1 and 2 ck as short as possible in order to be ideally and easily prepared for step 2 ck.

Dedicated studying period: 1.5 months (7-10h/d)

UWorld Total: 79.3% (85th percentile) 2 months subscription
UWorld Total 2nd round: 93% (99th percentile) 1 month subscription
1.5 months ahead: UWSE I: 570 - 260 (81%)
1 month ahead: BME 6: 560, 250
3 weeks ahead: NBME 7: 570 - 252
10d ahead: UWSE II: 580 - 261
5 days ahead: NBME 8: 690 - 275

The real deal: 269 :o:happy:

Sorry to rehash the thread but how did people who have already received their scores feel coming out of the exam?

doer91 01-12-2019 03:36 PM

Any recent test takers?!

Please keep this thread rolling, thank you. It helps others.:)
