Which Master the Boards book for CK Prep?

Hello USMLEites!
I'm having a tough time deciding between which book to buy, the MTB STEP-2 OR MTB STEP-3 for step-2ck.

Some say that MTB-3 is better in some areas than MTB-2, but I have enough time for only one book.

I'd be thankful if anyone can advise which single book is better and why so that i can buy the relevant book.
Thanks in advance!

machard 02-02-2011 12:05 PM

MTB-2

Conrad Fischer is a smart guy, he knows very well what comes in CK and what comes in Step 3 exam, I don't think he'd written a special CK book for nothing, that book must contain the relevant CK info.

I'd go for MTB-2

mary 02-02-2011 12:10 PM

This is an interesting poll, let's see which book will win

cool_atomic 02-02-2011 01:07 PM

come on people, we want those who've read mtb to vote!
it'll help all aspirants somehow!

swift 02-04-2011 05:57 AM

Both OK

They are both good
I was reading the MTB-3 then I receive the MTB-CK, I noticed that MTB-CK is focusing more on the "best initial test, best diagnostic test, ..etc" which is really what we need for the CK prep, so I voted for MTB-CK.

hedihav_x 02-04-2011 04:49 PM

Should we study this book beside kaplan notes? or instead of kaplan notes? :notsure:

kalpana 02-04-2011 07:48 PM

Good idea

Yeah, why not, that's a good idea. Do the MTB-for CK and then start doing questions and if you do well then that's it

I've bought kaplan notes so I decide to read them.I want to know should I buy this book too?if yes, when is the best time for read that?last month?(like FA for step1?) or after first reading of kaplan notes finished?

Dr. N Elham 02-05-2011 01:08 AM

Good poll

I have completed two reads of kap notes and one read of uw.
I'm gonna start MTB-2 today..

I'll inform u guys how it is.

I think it should be used as FA. The reason I haven't started it so far is that it wasn't available in my country until a few days ago, however, for those who are in early stages of prep or are gonna start soon, I suggest to use it early. As is the way for using FA i.e., the relevant part after reading each subject's kap notes and then just 2 weeks b4 exam...

hey sparco,
I've just started on MTB-2 because i ordered this book based on the poll results above. I think its fairly good and will be done in another 2 weeks

cuppycake 07-19-2011 08:53 AM

Good book, but FA is better.

Hey Guys,

I have finished 1 read of MTB for Ck
Its a good book only for a few topics like
1. CVS
2. renal
3. Rheumatology
4. Endocrinology
5. Infectious diseases ( only the initial antibiotic discussion)

Remaining units like GIT, CNS and Pulmo are not up to the required standards.

Surgery is bad.
Obg and peds are avg.

Ace3 07-19-2011 10:09 AM

I have the book but not started yet... why everyone is saying do it 2-3 times when it is not up to mark..... How eveyone supplementing deficit ones??...i guess we have to read mtb 2 for IM, deficit part from kaplan, FA and mtb3 for surgery , obs and pead. Thats what i heard from friends so i am planning to do that. But when to start mtb along first read or second read..before online q bank or along q bank suscription??:scared:

Sparco 07-19-2011 08:07 PM

my idea

my plan is to read MTB 2 (IM part) along with kaplan for IM together (first read) and at the same time solve UWorld Qs subjectwise and do the annotations in MTB which in the end will be my source of revision, I'm not planning to do FA and will follow the same plan for other subjects combining Kapllan notes with MTB 3 and Uworld Qs.

sana akbar 09-11-2011 08:14 PM

i have compared both mtb2 n mtb 3 in detail with the kaplan Internal Medicine to choose one bk for myself....mtb 2 is the exact summary of kaplan bt its written in paragraph forms n gets a lil lenghty....whereas mtb3 is written in points form n covers exactly the same topics as in mtb 2 n is not so lengthy..their sequence varies only....so i think,i'l go mtb3...this is my point of view...

rickybhimani31 09-13-2011 03:08 AM

well i am doing mtb 2 for IM it is for sure this book is amazing but for paeds u have to look for FA also, i would like to know that what about gynae obs i haven't study gynae obs from kaplan n planning to give exam at the end of oct so shall i go for mtb 2 n FA for gynae obs or shall i go for kaplan notes n so far my uworld score in tutor mode is 76%....Happy-2

rickybhimani31 10-28-2011 10:19 AM

Hi dear friends to be frankly i am doing MTB 2 n first aid with uworld but yet to have appear in exam by the end of november so can't guide u but i feel mtb 2 with first aid is enough.......

Seetal 10-28-2011 06:16 PM

rickybhimani31 10-29-2011 03:23 AM

Well dear sonu i am doing it coz i dunt have eough time to revise kaplan again n again what i am doing is doing uworld with mtb 2 n FA as i said i haven't yet given the paper but i am finding FA interesting i would suggest yes they 2 are good books but lets see how am i going to do in real paper it counts on that n further more depends upon your previous knowledge..........Happy-2

yes FA is heaps fun cos the explanations are short n not very point formatted like the MTB. but im not sure if FA alone is enough. perhaps for some of you its more than enough because you have a good grasp on CK in general.

Seetal 10-29-2011 05:32 AM

just curious

did u guys buy MTB2 or downloaded it online?

sonu.agarwall 10-29-2011 05:34 AM

i dint buy it still but planning to buy.....coz i need to add notes into it....and i personally prefer reading from a book than from a laptop...:)

jorgemorales 10-29-2011 05:40 AM

Hey guys,

I found MTB-2CK to be an amazing book.

My plan for CK was: Kaplan Lecture Notes once, then MTB-2CK and finally UW. I took the test August 2nd and got a 258/99.

Did everything in exactly 2 months, right after Step 1 and Step 2 CS. I found there was some overlap between Step 1 and CK, so it would be wise to do it in sequence.

I'm now preparing for Step 3 and already read MTB-3. In my opinion, MTB-2CK is better for CK, but MBT-3 could also do the work for CK. One thing that do bothers me is that MTB-3 is not updated, compared to MTB-2CK. I think that MTB-2CK is a much better book than MTB-3, in it's format, errors (quite a lot in MTB-3) and overall content. Nevertheless, MTB-2CK might not be sufficient for STEP 3 when it comes to patient management.

Hope this helps. Good luck to everyone.

sonu.agarwall 10-29-2011 05:42 AM

awesome score....and in good time tooo....gud luck with ur step 3

I've searched endlessly for it online and it doesn't seem to be available so I just ordered it from Amazon. I haven't gotten much into it since my CS is around the corner but I like what I've seen so far. In case you are wondering, MTB3 can be found online though.

DIABLO 12-02-2011 01:00 AM

mtb2 and 3

Actually no one has a sound opinion regarding a solid comprehensive book 4 ck, use mtb2 ck to study medicine and psychiatry other subjects are too weak in mtb2, mtb3 is modeled in such a way that it is meant 4 step 3,
I think in my opinion u should try combining 1st aid with Kaplan 4 the rest of the subjects..
I am usin mtb3 felt a lot of mistakes in the book, I was not able to score good we and I did kaplan q book questions

kinnu 12-18-2011 10:55 AM

Hello Friends... as per my knowledge MTB 2 is mere waste for subjects like Surgery, Pediatrics and Obs n Gyn... all the topics written by Conrad Fischer in MTB 2 r awesome... for other topics MTB 3 is the good 1... so dont waste time in reading MTB 2 for the topics written by others except Conrad Fischer...

evavar 03-01-2012 11:08 AM

MTB step 3 is better than MTB step 2ck

I have both books, bought them on amazon.
I just started studying and so far MTB step 3 is better, I said better because it has more information, is more clear and easier to understand and is basically the same as reading kaplan lecture notes, wich I also bought on amazon.
I'm doing OBGYN, and that's my input so far comparing both books. I don't know about the other subjects, I will keep posting to let you people know.

Happy studying.:happy:Happy-2

I agree somewhat! I bought both. I had CK 1st and both MTB3, and I'm reviewing IM so far and reading both books, and find out MTB3 has more stuff, but CK is still good for always giving next step stuff, less spelling mistakes and has slightly more recent info (tho wont affect score much). If one has the money, I still suggest buying both, but if one can only buy one, then prob MTB3 in my opinion.

evavar 03-01-2012 04:33 PM

Yes. I agree. Having both is good because what's not in MTB CK is in MTB3.
If I will have to choose one I will go also with MTB step 3.
Buying both is great, anyways you are going to have to buy MTB 3 for step 3, so there's no harm in buying it a little earlier. :))

MTB2 vs MTB3?

Hi guys!
i will be starting my ck prep soon. and i hav a couple of concerns. plz fellow steptakers, if anyone can help me out with this..

1. MTB2 is better for IM.. and MTB 3 is good for Obs/Gynae and paeds?? is that so??

2. WHat abt surgery and psych? which revw books are good for these?

3. is MTB the bible of step2? like FA was for step1? asin how many times minimum should we review MTB?

4. as for Kaplan Videos, is it sufficient to watch only the IM videos? How good are the obs/gynae and paeds videos?

thanx!

Torsades42 03-21-2012 08:58 AM

I thought MTB 2 was excellent for IM, and that is about it. I used FA Step 2 CK for the rest of the subjects. I know a lot of people say FA isn't very good for CK but the new edition has lots of additions. I think everyone can agree that neither of the books are enough for a complete review, and have to supplemented with notes from some other source (I personally used Kaplan). I hope that helps!

Where to get UWorld?

[QUOTE=Sparco;54711]my plan is to read MTB 2 (IM part) along with kaplan for IM together (first read) and at the same time solve UWorld Qs subjectwise and do the annotations in MTB which in the end will be my source of revision, I'm not planning to do FA and will follow the same plan for other subjects.
