UWSA 243 NBME 3 600= 240 just finished step 3 Wed of this week. Exam was def hard but manageable. I screwed up on 3 CCS cases. One was a man with syncopal episode who (to make a long story short) had HOCM. I sent him to ED, did a cardiac w/u to r/o MI and prescribed metoprolol after diagnosing HOCM. He comes back to office and says that his SOB imroved but he has had two more syncopal episodes, then the case ends. Apparently I was supposed to insert an AICD ![]() ![]() |

hi all ,
i got my step 3 result yesterday . it's 228 ! my uwsa = 580/235 usmle sim.test = 78% nbme 2 = 290 ( that one i messed up b/c of nerves ) nbme 3 = 600 . so there is a bit of correlation, give or take 5-7 points ( as in my case ). i prepared in 2 months along with clinical externships twice a week. i read kaplan lecture notes for CK, touched here and there on MTB-ck, did uw mcqs timed mode twice and uw CCS cases 3 times. Step 3 exam 1st day was really hard in context to managing time as there were 47-48 questions/block although i had always practiced in timed mode. 2nd day was a breeze. the mcqs were doable, 36 questions in 45 mins/block and CCS cases went fast. I got out 1 1/2 hr earlier. I had a good feeling about my CCS cases when i was done . best of luck to everyone going through this final step in usmle journey. |

Yah I would say so, to me Uworld is consistently adequate prep. It covered most concepts. Difficulty-wise I would say that the actual exam was erratic, there were questions that would be tooooo basic (too basic that you don't remember) then questions that would be out-of-this-world. I would advice doing FIP and ACM questions separately on Uworld to get a feel because Day 1 is FIP and Day 1 is hell. Period. Good luck in advance!

I honestly thought I screwed up after the exam, probably the fact that I am currently doing my IM internship helped a lot with allowing for shorter prep... because grossly speaking the exam felt mostly "IM, et al", plus working with placing orders on an antiquated electronic med records system at the moment familiarizes you on how to work around CCS.

Day 1 was FIP and was basically Step 1/a bit Step 2 CK type questions including biostat around 8/block plus drug ads. I solely relied on UWorld and MTB 3 for my prep, try to get a feel how FIP on Uworld is like. I didnt go through Step 1/2CK books except the biostat part of First Aid Step 1 two to three days prior to exam, which is just around 3 pages. Biostat is high yield, the rest of Day 1 is UWorld plus fate ![]() Congrats btw on improving, keep it up! CCS seems hard at start but I advice to master it because after the exam you will realize it is the easiest part, easy to waste if not prepared for.

Hello,
Today I did NMBE form 3 and I scored 480! I did UWSA one month ago and I scored 480 as well. Where is the problem? I am reviewing Uworld and MTB3 and my exam is on May 11. Looking for advice on what to do over the next 2 weeks to improve my performance. Thank you.

There is no 3 digit score for NBME. The average is 500 with 100 SD.

It's past the initial changes for Step 3 period so expect to get it in 4 weeks' time. Mine came on a Thursday (rather than the usual Wednesday we're used to).
Good luck! |

Finished kaplan classroom anywhere, UW (average 69%). Will begin ccs uw soon. Is it enough 1 month to prepare for ccs with uw? |

That's a good average. 1 week is probably enough for ccs but make sure you know the software well and go through what is bad/neutral/good for the patient encounter. It all depends if you're also tech savvy and what your learning style is.

Hi @shahkeval, my score report was from 09/19/2014; the average then was 221. I can't find current information but of course the higher the better.
You really have to find out if programs value the Step 3 score. A lot of places didn't place much weight on this exam for screening their candidates. In general, a decent score won't hurt but if you end up with an attempt, that definitely will. If you think a high Step 3 score will help to mask your attempts/scores in previous exams or time from graduation, that's also another incentive. The only time it's super important is if the program sponsors H1B visa. http://www.usmle-forums.com/img-resi...-matching.html |

@nasism - Thank you very much for response. I dont have any attempts. I dont need any visa. I dint match last year. May be because of average LORs and step 2 ck score which is 213. step is 224. So, I am planning to get some more than my ck and step 1 score. will that be enough ? I am also working as a full time research assistant.

@toysk - the two options you gave aren't clear scenarios. Assuming that both candidates have the exact same credentials - eg IMG, same step 1/ck/cs scores and attempts, same number of publications, etc - I think another low score on Step 3 would actually hurt your chances. Again however, it depends on what specialty you're going for. Step 3 is normally done during residency and some programs/specialties weigh more on it than others, even though the exam is multi-disciplinary.
http://www.nrmp.org/wp-content/uploa...eport-2014.pdf - PD survey report (especially Figure 1) @shahkeval - focus on your research and try to publish in a good journal. Study for Step 3 but don't put all your eggs in one basket. There is a general trend of how scores are in all 3 steps and most people do worse on Step 3 than the other exams - but don't let this discourage you. Tread carefully and make connections. If you're in a U.S. hospital/facility, make sure you are seen and that people like you. It's amazing how that helps more than just scores (unless you're 250+). http://www.usmle.org/pdfs/transcript...Guidelines.pdf - General trend of scores 2011-2013 (especially Table 1) Good luck to everyone! ![]() |

Hi neuralcrest,
Thanks! Great to be done! UWSA doesn't have the CCS component so maybe that might have helped bring my score up for the actual exam. I felt quite confident doing the cases. Also, I did Archer questions: http://usmlestep3blog.com/usmle-step-3-mcq/ Navigations to the questions are on both left and right panels. The answer key is also on the website but it's not complete nor is it necessarily comprehensive. The scoring sections reported are: - Clinical Encounters (Initial Work-ups, Continuing Care, Urgent Care) - Physician Tasks (History/Physical/Diagnostic Studies, Diagnosis/Prognosis, Health Maintenance/Systems/Legal & Ethical, Clinical Intervention, Clinical Therapeutics, Applying Scientific Concepts) - Clinical Settings (Office/Health Center, In-patient Facilities, Emergency Department) - Disorders by Organ Systems (haha you know what they are) - Patient Age (Birth-5yrs, 6-17, 18-54, 55-74, >75yrs) - Computer-based Case Simulations Each of the components in the brackets are scored the same way with the "xxxxx" indicating Lower/Borderline/Higher performance scale. All the best! Last one to go! Last edited by nasism; 05-30-2015 at 02:10 PM. |

Actually my scores are: step 1 - 228, ck - 242, cs - pass (all steps from 1 attempt). Have 4 publications in my country, 3 years of residency in Cardiology (in my country), 3 months of volunteering in US clinic, 1 US LOR (and will get 2 more). Year of grad - 2012. Active BLS certificate. I'm going to apply for IM/FM. So how do u think - step 3 ~ 220 will hurt or help me? 220 - is it a low score? |

Tosyk - 220 is a good score for Step 3. Your credentials sound solid. Make sure to secure US LORs, preferably with your rights to see them waived. ![]() |

The second day, straight forward CK questions. 6 blocks of 33 questions. questions. No major issues and I found CCS part is easy (7 cases of 20 mins and 6 cases of 10 mins). For CCS UW is more than enough. Best of luck,

studied for around 3 months on and off during my residency. #1 tip know usmle world inside and out like you knew it for step 1!
UW first time: 60% UWSA: 216 UW second time: 72% NBME form 3: 450 Real Deal: 203 Read your CK notes for day one and MTB step 3/Uworld is great for day 2. As for biostats try and scan through the drug ads sometimes the questions are extremely simple you have scan for the information in the drug ad. Best of luck to you all and thank you all who contribute to this forum! ![]() |
