Calendar Extension of Eligibility Period Step by Step?

Hi,

My exam is on May 23rd (11 day) remain between exam day and my eligibility (April May June) and I want to extend my my eligibility to (July August September)

I was reading some reply in the forums, here's a quote;
Quote:
you should first cancel your Prometric date.
then you log into your ECFMG account, and there will be an option to extend the eligibility period. You can extend it only once and you have to pay a fee. It was 50$ till last year.

Once you extend your eligibility period you will be sent a new scheduling permit in the next 2 weeks...once you get your scheduling permit you can reschedule your exam with Prometric.
So is that the steps to do?? in ECFMG should I go to IWA and reschedule ??

Could any one write to me step by step how to do it ???

Thumbs Up Correct

Yes, the steps mentioned in the text you quoted are accurate.

Cancel the Prometric appointment. Then log on to your IWA account and click on "extend eligibility period" and wait for new scheduling permit and then log on to Prometric again to schedule a new date in your new eligibility period.

Note, that since you have less than 30 days before your scheduled Prometric appointment, then you have to pay a fee to Prometric.

Note, that requesting an extension of your eligibility period does not automatically cancel your current scheduled appointment, you have to cancel your Prometric appointment first.

Default written letter is needed.

Hey,

Cancel your already scheduled appointment.

You have to send a letter in writing requesting for an extension in your eligibility period to the ECFMG. Clearly mention your ECFMG ID no. and the letter has to be signed by you.

You will receive a new scheduling permit in 2 to 3 weeks time.

I am not sure about the re-scheduling fee.

That is all absolutely true though I feel the safest and easiest way is to call ecfmg/Prometric and do it on the phone.

Hi, i had to extend my eligibility period. I logged in IWA and sent request for extension of eligibility period. They asked me to send form 183 E verified by college because i just graduated (applied as a student). I was unaware of the fact that i had to cancel my appointment with pro-metric center first... silly me I have not sent my form 183 yet and will send it in couple of days. As soon as after reading this post, i canceled my prometric center appointment. WILL I HAVE TO PAY 65$ AGAIN. or its fine now. my test date was 30th june. and now is cancelled.
Thanks

You don't need to write any letter. First cancel your appointment with Prometric for which you have to pay a fee then you can extend your eligibility period through IWA, I think the fee for this extension is 65 $ currently.

Today I canceled my appointment and rescheduled from ECFMG/IWA and I paid $65.
to extend my eligibility and they didn't send me email

Quote:
You have successfully submitted the on-line part of your request.
The Certification of Identification Form (Form 186) you previously submitted to ECFMG remains valid.
If the processing of your request is not completed by 25 Jul 2011, your request will be rejected.
ECFMG will send you an e-mail confirmation after receiving the on-line part of your request and after
your request has been processed.
When will they send the confirmation email? after how many days?
and
my status is(Medical education credentials received and verification is pending.)
Is there anything more to do?

I have seen in ECFMG web site that you need to get your credentials verified to extend your eligibility period.

Here's a quote from the ECFMG Website
Quote:
You may request an extension of your eligibility period only once for each exam registration. You may request an extension of your eligibility period only after your original eligibility period has begun. The processing of your request must be completed by the published deadline (refer to the table below), or your request will be rejected. The time needed to complete the processing of your request may be contingent upon your medical school's response to ECFMG's request for verification of your status as a student or graduate.
What does this last bold sentence mean?

Arrow It means Form 186, not credentials verification

That sentence affects students more than graduates.
If a student changes status from student to graduate during the time he/she extends the eligibility period then his/her medical school has to reconfirm the new status by new Form 186. See this example

In the case of miss patho above, she's already a graduate and she already has valid Form 186 with them. She does not need to wait until verification of her credentials. See this poll

Extension of eligibility period is not different (as far as credentials concerned) from the initial registration and getting the scheduling permit.

Yes I did extend my eligibility period.
I was as confused as you with different people giving different ways to go about it.
I suggest, you call up to the ECFMG and talk to them about it.
I did the same thing and thats when they asked me to fax them a letter in writing.
Talking to them over phone is the safest thing for you now 'coz you have very little time left.

Dear Doctor:

We have received your Interactive Web Application (IWA) Request to Extend a USMLE Eligibility Period. Your eligibility period for the Step 2 CK has been extended to September 30, 2011. Your testing region remains the same as stated in your original registration notice.

In the near future, the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) will issue a new permit showing your extended eligibility period. Only electronic scheduling permits will be generated; applicants will access their electronic scheduling permits using ECFMG's Interactive Web Application (IWA). You will not receive a paper permit by postal mail. Please note that in about one week you will receive another email from ECFMG to notify you that your new scheduling permit is available. Although this new permit will be issued by NBME, you should contact ECFMG if you have any questions or concerns about this permit.

You must bring this new permit and acceptable identification with you to the test center on the date of the exam.

This new permit is very important, and you should be careful not to lose it. You cannot take the exam without this new permit. If you lose this new permit, you may print another one by using IWA. If the name on the permit is not correct, you must contact ECFMG immediately.

Please refer to the ECFMG Information Booklet and USMLE Bulletin of Information for detailed information on scheduling your testing appointment and taking the exam. Both of these publications are available on the Publications page of the ECFMG web site at www.ecfmg.org.

Sincerely,

Registration and Credentials Services

Yeah, I did receive a similar mail.
Congrats, your job is pretty much done. I did extend my eligibility period and also wanted a change in the testing region as I was moving out of the country. That was quite a long procedure. Its all done now, though !
Yup, I am a grad with a valid 186 form.
Giving my step 1 in a couple of days from now.

Default does old eligibility period remain an option after extending

i want to extend my eligibility period form may-june-july to aug-sept-oct
my question is can i take the exam in july after i extend my eligibility period or is it only the newly designated 3months (aug-sept-oct)
the problem is that i wanted to take the exam in july but im facing some problems in my home country and i'm not sure if i can still make it in july so i'm extending to be prepared to any scenario, but at the same time i really want to take the exam in july if i can. so does old eligibility period remain an option after extending or not

I think you can give your exam in july. If you extend your eligibility period, your new scheduling permit will say your eligibility period is from
may - october. Which means you can take your exam anytime between may and oct ! Ya, it is subjected to the availability of vacant slots in your testing region. so go back and check for availability of dates.

Default Eligibility Period Extension

Hi everyone,

I have a question regarding my Eligibility period and extension.
My eligibility period ends in June (it was April, May, June). I feel like I might need more time so I would like to know how to extend it to July August September and most likely take the exam in early July (thats if i extend it)!

I searched the threads and came across Sabio's post above -

Quote:
Yes, the steps mentioned in the text you quoted are accurate.

Cancel the Prometric appointment. Then log on to your IWA account and click on "extend eligibility period" and wait for new scheduling permit and then log on to Prometric again to schedule a new date in your new eligibility period.

Note, that since you have less than 30 days before your scheduled Prometric appointment, then you have to pay a fee to Prometric.

Note, that requesting an extension of your eligibility period does not automatically cancel your current scheduled appointment, you have to cancel your Prometric appointment first.
My questions are -

1) After clicking "extend eligibility period" how long do I wait till I get my new scheduling permit.

2) Do I have to do anything with the school again? Form 186 ? That was the only form I sent in along with the photos etc when I applied the first time. Do I have to send those in again?

Thanks for the responses.

No you don't need, if your status stayed the same and you still have valid Form 186 (as you can check it in your OASIS account).

Default help

I got my schedule permits and ECFMG sent me this email
Quote:
Your REVISED STEP 2 CK SCHEDULING PERMIT IS NOW AVAILABLE on the ECFMG Interactive Web Applications (IWA) website. Discard any previously printed permits for this exam.

YOU MUST PRINT YOUR REVISED SCHEDULING PERMIT AND BRING IT WITH YOU TO THE TEST CENTER ON YOUR SCHEDULED DATE. You will not be able to take the test if you do not bring your revised Scheduling Permit to the test center.

To access your Scheduling Permit, go to IWA at https://iwa2.ecfmg.org, login, and select "Print/Reprint your USMLE Step 2 CK Scheduling Permit." Your permit will open in a new browser window. Use your browser's "Print" function to print the permit.
but there is note in the email that I don't understand
Quote:
[B]Important Note for Examinees who

- cancelled a testing appointment 30 or fewer days before their scheduled test date, or
- were turned away by the Prometric Test Center on their scheduled test date, or
- did not appear on their scheduled test date.

If you fall into one of these three categories and have not already called Prometric to pay an appointment change fee, your updated eligibility record failed to load into Prometric's system. You will not be able to schedule a testing appointment until you call Prometric, as directed on your scheduling permit, and pay a fee to reinstate your eligibility record. After you have paid the appointment change fee, you must e-mail NBME at USMLEReg@nbme.org to notify the NBME that you have paid the appointment change fee. In your e-mail to NBME, you must

- type "Resend Eligibility" in the subject line, and
- type in the e-mail text that you have paid the appointment fee to Prometric. Include your full name, USMLE ID Number, examination type (Step 1 and/or Step 2 CK) and Testing Region in the e-mail text.

After receipt of the e-mail from you, the NBME will send your updated information to Prometric and respond to you within two business days. After you receive NBME's response, you can then contact Prometric to reschedule your testing appointment. Please do not telephone the NBME.
I canceled my Prometric exam date only in 13 may and my exam supposed 23 may I didn't pay for Prometric (I cancel online) and then I extended my eligibility, I paid $65 only
What I have to do plz advise me?
do i have to call the Prometric now or when I want to set a date for my exam?

Yes, Call Prometric to reinstate your eligibility. They'll ask you to pay $50 for cancellation.
Prometric fees is separate from the ECFMG fees.
After you cancel with them (pay the fees), you need to contact the email they mentioned in their email.

PS- Let us know what will happen with you.

Default ???????

I sent the email to NBME (USMLEReg@nbme.org) since 7 days (5 business days if we skip Sat and Sunday) and they didn't reply to me

Quote:

So I want advise what I have to do? resend them the same email again? or wait?

I have a feeling that there's something wrong here.
The NBME is for US Medical Students only, not for IMGs.
Also this is the first time I hear that you have to email the NBME to confirm your new Prometric appointment!
I suggest you call the ECFMG again. Tell them specifically "why am I contacting the NBME? I am not a US Medical Student"
See what they tell you.

Calling the ECFMG repeatedly does no harm and is often beneficial because different employees have different experiences and knowledge and your second or third call might solve the problem.

Tell us what will happen with you.

I still think there's something wrong.
IMGs should never contact the NBME.
See this page
http://www.nbme.org/contact/index.html
They clearly mentioned in that page that USMLEreq@nbme.org is for US and Canadian Medical students, not for IMGs.

Also, the fact that they told you "you are the first one complaining about NBME, is another proof, that your situation is unusual".

OK, try to call the NBME here's the phone number
(215) 590-9700
Don't worry that they told you not to call, nothing will happen just call them and see what they say about it.

I just realized that you are not the first IMG to experience this.
I found that there was another IMG who had to contact the NBME, here's the link

Hi
were you able to figure out what you have to do ?
I am going to change my eligibility period today as well!
I called ECFMG and they said my Form 186 is still valid so i dont have to fill it out again. So i believe i dont have to do anything with the school just have to cancel my prometric appt and apply for extension online. Is that correct ?

Important Note for Examinees who

- cancelled a testing appointment 30 or fewer days before their scheduled test date, or
- were turned away by the Prometric Test Center on their scheduled test date, or
- did not appear on their scheduled test date.
If you fall into one of these three categories and have not already called Prometric to pay an appointment change fee, your updated eligibility record failed to load into Prometric's system. You will not be able to schedule a testing appointment until you call Prometric
then send NBME email
also
ecfmg will send u email of extension with schedule permits within days

Hi
I just went online to cancel my prometric appointment which was booked for June 28th. So i have 32 days left!
and this is what the msg said -
This appointment is past the cutoff date for modification.

Do you know what that means? Do i have to pay a fee? I still have more than 30 days !

today the NBME send me email

Quote:
Dear Dr.

I was informed that you paid the appointment change fee to Prometric to reschedule your appointment for the above examination.

Prometric reinstated your eligibility record, and I updated your eligibility period in their system. You may now go online or call Prometric to schedule a new appointment in your extended eligibility period using the Scheduling Number from your Scheduling Permit.

Sincerely,
Rachael, on behalf of USMLE Registration
National Board of Medical Examiners
http://www.nbme.org
funny i took the NBME 20 days to send the email
so if that happen to someone just call prometric to be sure that the NBME updated ur new eligibility
i hope this experience will help the others

Hey all,
I've just cancelled my scheduled appointment online and sent ECFMG a request for extension of the eligibility period. The posts in this thread were very helpful, but there's one thing that's not clear for me. When and how do i make the payment required by prometric??

Default Call Prometric and pay them over phone.!!

Call prometric .. tell them you want to pay the $50 to reinstate your eligibility.. and then give them your credit card details.. THROUGH PHONE ... and then.. that's it..!!

Default Call Prometric

Call prometric and pay the money or else the updated eligibility record will fail to load into prometric's system if you wait till you get the permit.

u can extend only if u have a form 186 accepted
if that the case u can extend it
if u dont and ur paper took long time call the ecfmg and tell them ur case they will extend it

Default hi

yes if you want to extend the eligibility period any time even if before 6 months you should pay65$

but if you wnat to reschedule the date of exam (without extended the eligibility period ) before more than one month this process will be free.

good luck

Hi,
I am confused about something please help me out.
My exam was on april second with an eligibiliy period that ends on april 30th.
I wanted to postpone my test date til jun so I requested an eligibility period extension and paid the 65$ fee BEFORE I cancelled my date with prometric.
Then I went on prometric and cancelled my april 2nd date (I checked the rescheduling fee before i cancelled it was 50$ clicked back to cancel it), and my date was cancelled FOR FREE WITH NO FEE APPLIED.
Please was applying for an extension before the cancellation wrong? Now if I click on reschedule in prometric site it does says that my cancellation was verified. Is this normal?
The 50$ dollars I should make prometric is paid upon cancelling or rescheduling? If it's paid upon cancelling why didn't I pay it?
What should I do next?

I thank you so much in advance

Question question about eligibility period

Is it necessary 4 the EXTENDED eligibility period 2 be in the consecutive 3 months directly following the original period (Ex: if original period was may-june-july, can it be oct-nov-dec)?

Supposedly my eligibility period was oct-nov-dec 2013 can i extend it into 2014?

Default eligibility extensioin

Hey guys,
i've been reading a few threads about extending eligiibility periods. I applied to ecfmg as a med school graduate and my credentials have been primary source verified n i hav a valid form 186 on file. Do i need to submit any forms to extend my eligibility period?
read this on ecfmg : ECFMG cannot complete the processing of your request until your medical school verifies your graduate/student status.

Thanks in advance....

Default HELP

[QUOTE=Sabio;39756]Yes, the steps mentioned in the text you quoted are accurate.

MY DOUBT-----

-i Cancelled my appointment within 30days of my exam but prometric didnta sk me to pay any fees and in the mail sent by USMLE website its said tht i must call prometric and inform them abt this is tht true....

Hi guys,
I dont understand one thing: if i apply for an eligibility period extension, and it does not get processed by the deadline, then my request will not be accepted... but what if by that time my original eligibility period has also expired?? What will happen then??!!!
